As I said at today’s #mntoy banquet, Minnesota needs to celebrate its teachers/educators a little less and care for them a lot more. They aren’t the same. It’s the difference between saying something and actually doing something.

In her early teaching years, Maria Le Selmer had as few as 18 students in her first grade class. In the 17 years since, she's had as many as 33. This year, she has 28. She urges #mnleg to pass our class size reduction bill. "It's nearly impossible for me to meet their needs."

Congrats, @MFT59 & @MFT59ESP! You marched through rain and snow because you believed students deserved better. Your contracts are lighthouses for educators all over MN who demand more respect, more support for their students, and living and competitive wages for every educator.

Why isn’t the #mnleg figuring out an expeditious distribution of the $9B surplus? Not like we don’t know a few places to send it with strikes and unsettled contracts out there.

It is beyond time for schools and communities where all students and their families can thrive and pursue their dreams - no matter where they live, what they look like, who they live or where they pray - not just the wealthy few. 5/5

Have we learned nothing during the pandemic? It feels that way. There is an urgency to get back to normal and with that is an acceptance of the pre-pandemic status quo in our schools. A disregard of the voices from school staff and students telling us what they need. 3/x

What this means is things weren’t good in schools before the pandemic & it certainly has not improved. It’s worse at school and at home, while the wealthiest continue to do better. Educators are taking collective action to see transformational changes for students and staff. 2/x

In MN, the pandemic is bookended by educator strikes. The St. Paul Federation of Educators stopped their 2020 strike when the pandemic began. This spring, as the pandemic comes to an end, we see another strike - this time by the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers. 1/x
