I told @tagesschau that driving #Italy’s mobilization for #Gaza is a solidarity strongly felt among left & catholic segments of the society. #Meloni is, for the first time, under pressure. But too soon to say whether mobilization will change electoral results.

There are few precious voices left that can halt the vicious spreading of hate speech & polarization. @reider is one of them.
Two takes we can really do without: 1. Blaming the attack on pro-Palestine marches. 2. Highlighting pro-Israel positions expressed by/at the synagogue to justify the attack. Irresponsible, dangerous and vile.

'The Gulf states are proactively engaging with Iraq in a new way... Many have diversified their interlocuters in Iraq and they are reaching out in different ways,' says @MariaFantappie in Session 4 of the #IraqInitiative conference. https://t.co/swnL1VbBeY

10/10 “Protests change nothing for people in Gaza” wrote Meloni in her statement. Yet, her handling protests the wrong way could reopen the (ever unresolved) radical right/radical left divide in the country and create the very conditions for violence.

9/10 Meloni’s temptation may be that of demonizing the strike and all movements in solidarity with Gaza as “violent left”. Right wing & Meloni’s coalition partner Matteo Salvini is openly pushing for that.
Immagini impressionanti.

8/10 UNGA should be an opportunity for Italy to define its stance. If unwilling to recognize Palestine, Italy should at least define clear steps for its contribution to an end to the conflict. Hiding behind the two states solution narrative would no longer work.

7/10 Joint statement with KSA was a good start yet after today’s strike and the international resonance it had, Meloni gov. may have to do something more, especially if wanting to preserve the image of a stable Italy with strong domestic consensus for the government in charge.

6/10 Also, unlike France and other EU states, Italy has not hinted at recognizing Palestine. Yet, Rome kept engaged with Arab states (Jordan) and Gulf states in particular, and recently issued a bolder statement jointly with Saudi Arabia. https://t.co/0ISeWOJti7

5/10 Meloni’s holding back support for EU suspension of trade & sanctions on Israel deepened the fracture. In my view, this was more of a gesture of loyalty to the global right wing camp (and Trump in particular) rather than a statement of her support for Netanyahu.

4/10 All things considered, today’s strike was not *only* about Palestine. In Italy, as elsewhere in Europe, the conflict in Gaza has become a conflict within Europe’s own societies, exposing preexisting and unresolved tensions and notably that between society & political class.

3/10 Yet, inaction prevailed in politics. Right wing conservatives have been locked into the “Hamas = terrorists” narrative. Center left stance on Israel/Palestine was also ambiguous to say the least. Result was the deepening of a fracture between society and political class

2/10 Second, let me say that all the support I have witnessed this year insofar has been peaceful. People across generations/class (and even some mainstream TV presenters) openly and genuinely stood in solidarity with people of Gaza.

1/10 First, things have been boiling for a while. Throughout this year — but especially since the summer — signs of support for Gaza have been everywhere, from big cities to remote rural villages of just hundreds of residents.

Italy’s strike for Palestine. An explainer for non-Italian audience. 🧵0/10
Wow! The people of Italy are taking matters into their own hands. There is a general strike all over the country against Israel's genocide - and Western complicity. According to journalist @paolomossetti, there are hundreds of demonstrations across the entire country.
