The person doing the work is the person doing the learning. The quick and dirty is to start a lesson with the students doing the thinking. See what they come up with and then go from there. Even if they come up with nothing then they realize they really really need you.

We have been using 5 E’s in living environment this year and it allows for students to make meaning and do the thinking for themselves. Exactly what we want our students to be able to do no matter the content!
