๐ Rather than raise taxes, Houston officials ran an audit and found $120M in savings. If Prop Q is rejected, the #ATXCouncil will have an opportunity to do the same thing and start building back trust with local residents.๐

Austinites will start weighing in on Prop Q next Monday, when early voting opens. If passed, it would raise our local property tax rate by 20%. If the measure is defeated, City Hall will have another opportunity to consider spending reductions, an alternative to the tax hike.
One of the big items on the Nov. ballot is 'Proposition Q'. Many Austin city council members support raising property taxes to help support the $6.3 billion budget proposal, but Councilman Marc Duchen has a different plan to do so without raising taxes. @cbsaustin

๐ค A few facts on Prop Q, which would hike our local property tax rate by 20%: 1๏ธโฃ It would raise taxes permanently. 2๏ธโฃ It would hand tens of millions more to service providers that already receive major public funding. 3๏ธโฃ Renters who think it won't impact them are wrong.

The new city initiative will also open to private funders and philanthropists, with a goal of generating tens of millions of preservation dollars in the years ahead.

I voted against the #ATXCouncil's budget proposal because I believe raising taxes will make our community less affordable, hurting all Austinites. They trust us to spend their money wisely, a trust we can't afford to lose. Here's the rest of my statement on the matter:
