🪲 Measuring biodiversity isn’t a one size fit’s all. On the contrary, in this study, applying measurements of species richness, species range rarity, and phylogenetic distinctiveness each told a different piece of the story and ultimately uncovered different patterns.

💡 Previous work carried out by @Yale_BGC and other colleagues in the field were critical in this study. Sandall et al. (2023), developed a globally integrated structure of taxonomy that greatly assisted in integrating & harmonizing the butterfly data from a multitude of sources.

🗺️By combining expert range maps, species distribution models, & an ecoregional mapping approach developed in the @Yale_BGC, co-lead researchers Walter Jetz at @Yale & Stefan Pinkert at The Philipp University of Marburg revealed unexpected biodiversity patterns you’d likely miss.

What it took to map most of known butterfly species… Recently published in the Nature Ecology and Evolution journal, our new study mapped 65% of known butterfly species, a milestone for insects which remain chronically understudied. 🦋
