A year of turning open data into impact across Latin America & the Caribbean. Our Regional Director, @Fscrollini, looks back on a year of learning, collaboration, and community-led mapping. Join our rewind, here’s what we built together at the LAC Hub in 2025. ⬇️

In 2025, the MANA Mapathons mobilized thousands across Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and Ecuador to create critical open data for adaptation and anticipatory action, showing how citizen mapping strengthens resilience before disasters.

At #COP30, HOT showed how open data strengthens climate resilience through @UNFCCC, @WIPO Green, and TED Countdown events. In St. Kitts & Nevis, we supported build the nation’s first open emergency database and trained local teams to map key sites for better disaster planning.

Our Caribbean Microgrants supported four community climate-resilience projects across the region. During Hurricane Melissa, @hotosm deployed ChatMap, drones, and global #OSM volunteers to deliver critical data for emergency response.

President @BArevalodeLeon highlighted HOT’s role in mapping 30K km of rural roads with 300 volunteers to improve connectivity and disaster response in Guatemala. In the Caribbean, HOT advanced a regional “data commons” to strengthen local climate and disaster resilience.

MapaData a collaboration with @TrufiAssoc and @CodeandoMexico advanced Mexico’s transport mapping in Oaxaca and Toluca. Our project, MapEdu, mobilized 38 school projects across LAC to map air quality, social needs, and risk zones, driving local action in five countries.

Indigenous communities across the Amazon used drones and open tools to map forests, prevent fires, and support local planning. In the Caribbean, the Pegasus Project boosted risk management in Jamaica and Saint Lucia through community-led hazard mapping.

Communities across LAC used open tech and drones to protect ecosystems and respond to crises, from mangrove monitoring in Mexico and sargassum tracking in the Dominican Republic to mapping 45,000+ buildings after floods in Argentina.

Our shared efforts focus on: 📊 Community-generated open data 🛰️ Tools like ChatMap + DroneTM to build local capacity 👥 The essential role of community groups 🌐 A shared Caribbean “data commons” Together, we’re working toward a more data-resilient Caribbean.

Despite facing some of the toughest disaster risks, the Caribbean leads with resilience and innovation. Building on our August workshop in Kingston 🇯🇲, partners across the region are shaping the future of geospatial collaboration for disaster management.
