My latest: Two prominent Chinese activists were tried for subversion Friday in Guangzhou in a closed-door proceeding, while supporters and activists criticized Chinese authorities for putting on a "sham trial" and calling for their immediate release.

Clarification: that’s not to say coups aren’t a concern in China and there aren’t elite Party constituencies that must be satisfied or whatever. Just that they seem less key to understanding things than broader state-society relations.

Realizing how much China is an authoritarian outlier today. Theories that I have always felt only offer modest leverage on the Chinese case—theories about coup-proofing, “selectorates”, etc.—seem immensely useful for understanding Russia right now.

Will be interesting to see what the All China Federation of Trade Unions does, given its recent rhetorical shift from "rights protection" to political discipline: https://t.co/7RAzYN6ODJ.

Great write-up by @chinalabour about what seems to be an upsurge in strikes and protests by Chinese workers against factory relocations and layoffs. https://t.co/XImVfLXvbQ. Nice run-down of employees' legal options, in particular.

A question for Twitter: where does one go in Western Canada to re-mount a treasured calligraphy scroll? Also, how does one safely remove what looks like blueberry jam or a smoothie from the scroll’s paper?

On the 34th anniversary of June 4th Massacre, we remember the thousands of peaceful protesters gunned down in the streets around #Tiananmen Square in Beijing, and countless other victims of atrocities in other Chinese cities in 1989. https://t.co/UgxBS2dZjZ

"Workers and unions are right to be furious at this ruling. But we should be careful not to sensationalize or overstate it—which could do more damage to the right to strike than the ruling itself does, by making workers scared to exercise it." https://t.co/Zf5ZhXCACY
