Are there tools of the imagination? In this paper I argue that visualizations, thought experiments, models, computer simulations, and metaphors are such tools, and I discuss how they can be evaluated using a single framework (consequentialism).

Synthese - Thought experiments, models, diagrams, computer simulations, and metaphors can all be understood as tools of the imagination. While these devices are usually treated separately in...

New paper on remote physics teaching in Norway during the pandemic. Students lost out on training key scientific practices such as experimentation and talking physics. Well done, @nikolaibjurholt. #iteachphysics @Fysikk_UniOslo

Our Pet Photons will be making an appearance at the Ozgrav stall. Find out what makes photons so weird, how we use them in gravitational wave detections, and explore space in VR!
OzGrav Stall at Astrofest Sat 29 Oct, 5.30pm-9.30pm, Curtin Stadium 👉 https://t.co/Vefo2QTDDA 🌠Visit the OzGrav stall at Astrofest to learn about gravitational waves. Make sure you check out the Photon Pets, VR headset and Mini-interferometer on display! @ARC_OzGRav

"How does objective reality emerge from the palette of possibilities supplied by #QuantumMechanics?" asks @philipcball in his latest piece on quantum physics & explains why physical-collapse theories appear to be collapsing themselves via @QuantaMagazine🤓
quantamagazine.org
Physical-collapse theories have long offered a natural solution to the central mystery of the quantum world. But a series of increasingly precise experiments are making them untenable.

"More than a century after Ernest Rutherford discovered the positively charged particle at the heart of every atom, physicists are still struggling to fully understand the proton," writes @walkingthedot via @QuantaMagazine 🤓 https://t.co/NEV8b5wr0p via @QuantaMagazine

The positively charged particle at the heart of the atom is an object of unspeakable complexity, one that changes its appearance depending on how it is probed. We’ve attempted to connect the proton’s...

Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar was born #OTD in 1910. He established an upper limit on the mass of stars that end their lives as white dwarfs. Above this Chandrasekhar Limit – about 1.44 solar masses – stars eventually explode and then collapse into a neutron star or black hole.
