President Donald Trump and Elon Musk said they have uncovered “fraud” in the federal government. But the White House largely cites projects it disagrees with ideologically.

Today, when Kennedy promised to “apologize for any statements that misled people” if shown evidence that vaccines do not cause autism, it called to mind the end of our 2023 Lie of the Year report:

But Kennedy has pushed this falsehood for years, including during his recent presidential run. It was one of the inaccurate claims that earned him PolitiFact's 2023 Lie of the Year.

The inaccurate claim traces back to a 1998 now-retracted paper whose lead author deliberately falsified his research, according to the UK’s medical licensing board. Decades of research shows autism rates do not rise when populations are vaccinated.
