Unpopular opinion: Everyone may say don't settle for less or you can stay single as long as you want to. But the society especially Indian society is not built for single people. Our cities, spaces, facilities, benefits are not designed for single people. Period.

Everyone is fascinated with hillstations. But not many know the realities of living in one in a country like India. It's about living with/navigating the perpetual fear of the water running out anytime, living without proper medical facilities, navigating a corrupt administration

Loneliness in old age is so debilitating. My grandmum today was telling at least if she is put in an old age home she will have people for company and someone to talk to. At home when everyone goes out for work, she ends up feeling very isolated and lonely.

On my trip home this time, one thing that not only me but my extended family visiting Siliguri noticed is how the city is literally awash with Jai Shree Ram flags in every book and corner. Growing up, Siliguri always had a secular fabric. That, however, seems to be fading.

It is about waiting for years for a job opportunity and proper development. So no, don't make the hillstations of India a part of your 'retirement plan' when you know nothing about the harsh realities. And no 'hill stations' growing old in one is not 'cute' either.
