Thank you for all your calls and emails. As a bureau of the City of Norfolk, the MacArthur Memorial is not affected by the Federal government shutdown. We continue normal hours and operations for both the museum and the archives.

Sept 30, 1950: MacArthur receives the "blank check" message from Secretary of Defense George C. Marshall. It instructs him to feel "unhampered tactically and strategically to proceed north of 38th parallel” and explains the UN prefers to sanction the move after the fact.

On January 26, 2024, Major General Kyungkoo Lee, Republic of Korea Defense Attaché to the United States, visited the MacArthur Memorial to posthumously present the award. (5/5)

That same day, President Rhee presented MacArthur with a citation for South Korea's Order of Military Merit at the Capital Building in Seoul. As the award did not yet officially exist, there is no record of MacArthur receiving an actual medal that day. (4/5)

Today marks the anniversary of the passing of Ben Steele, a Bataan Death March survivor. The MacArthur Memorial preserves many of his drawings which document the WWII POW experience after the fall of the Philippines in spring 1942. Learn more:
