OCT 1, 1950: having been told to feel "unhampered" in crossing the 38th parallel, General MacArthur prepares a statement on the matter to be distributed to the press and to the forces under his command. He runs the message by the Joint Chiefs and is told to not release it. (1/2)

Sept 30, 1950: MacArthur receives the "blank check" message from Secretary of Defense George C. Marshall. It instructs him to feel "unhampered tactically and strategically to proceed north of 38th parallel” and explains the UN prefers to sanction the move after the fact.

On January 26, 2024, Major General Kyungkoo Lee, Republic of Korea Defense Attaché to the United States, visited the MacArthur Memorial to posthumously present the award. (5/5)

That same day, President Rhee presented MacArthur with a citation for South Korea's Order of Military Merit at the Capital Building in Seoul. As the award did not yet officially exist, there is no record of MacArthur receiving an actual medal that day. (4/5)

He later described the scene: "...in the war-shattered assembly room sat row on row of heavily armed officers and men of both the U.N. and R.O.K. armies. On both sides of the room, the windows gaped brokenly, and the smell of death drifted through..." (3/5)

Then MacArthur said Rhee, "Mr. President, my officers and I will now resume our military duties and leave you and your government to the discharge of the civil responsibility." (2/5)

75 years ago today, and two weeks after the daring Inchon landings, MacArthur presided over a ceremony restoring the government of the Republic of Korea to President Syngman Rhee. At the beginning, all participants said the Lord's Prayer. (1/5)

Today marks the anniversary of the passing of Ben Steele, a Bataan Death March survivor. The MacArthur Memorial preserves many of his drawings which document the WWII POW experience after the fall of the Philippines in spring 1942. Learn more:
