It’s official! @BarhamSalih, former President of Iraq, has been elected as the next High Commissioner for Refugees. Having been a refugee himself, he brings powerful lived experience to lead UNHCR. We’re excited to welcome him soon. 💙

Yesterday, I briefed the UN Security Council about the eastern region of the DRC. I urged the Council to find the will to insist that civilians are not expendable, and that their rights to safety and dignity are non-negotiable. Read my full address: https://t.co/WvQttbRROz

In a powerful op-ed for @AJEnglish, @MSF_IP Dr Javid Abdelmoneim describes mass killings, starvation, ethnic-based attacks, and people fleeing El-Fasher on foot. Countries that have influence with the warring parties must act to prevent further atrocities. https://t.co/aCBjm2s2IR

Massacres at the start of the war in Sudan should have shocked the world into action. They didn't.

More than 20 years ago, the world mobilised for Darfur, Sudan. Today, world leaders shouldn’t look away from the plight of El Fasher. We cannot let El Fasher become a milestone of horrific violence. Read more from me and @MSF on @AJEnglish:

Horror is unfolding in El Fasher, Sudan. People are seemingly trapped in the city, and @MSF teams 60 km away are receiving malnourished people among those who have managed to escape. Civilians must be urgently protected, and safe escape routes must be provided.

On this World Mental Health Day, I’m glad that colleagues like Helina continue to provide a mental health lifeline for people in Tigray. Hear about her work:

Three years since the cessation of hostilities in Tigray, Ethiopia, people are living with the psychological impacts of trauma without widely available support.

Three years later the psychological trauma of that brutal war still haunts people, many of whom continue to live in displacement camps in very difficult conditions.

I’ll never forget the feeling of returning to Tigray, Ethiopia, at the end of the war in 2022, to restart services around Shire and Sheraro. At that time, people would wait for more than a day to see a doctor.

The progress made by the Global Fund in the fight against HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria is under threat because of funding cuts. The UK, Canada, US, and Germany, need to act now and pledge to fund their lifesaving work around the world. Tag your elected representative.

At our facilities across Port-au-Prince, Haiti, we treated 2,000+ victims of violence, on top of assisting another 2,000+ victims and survivors of sexual violence, between January and June. Civilians must be spared from escalating violence in the city: https://t.co/kHVoaMOaf0
