When work tells you to take a hike: do it! This morning I’m launching on a raft with friends down New Mexico’s last free-flowing river. Thanks for all your messages. I’ll be taking some time to reset before deciding on my next journalistic adventure.

How low-income minorities shoulder the heaviest tax burden in a city with one of the highest property tax rates in the nation.

A lower tax rate on the richest Texans means less revenue to invest in public works. El Paso is using debt to make up for its shortage in tax revenue.

Two-week-old news: Sadly, I no longer work for the @elpasotimes. @Gannett eliminated my position as the paper's race and diversity reporter just 20 months after it began. I was proud to contribute my skills to my hometown newspaper. Below, a thread of some of my favorite stories:

If you're a @Gannett employee impacted by layoffs, there is a team that's working on community aid needs (networking, food assistance, insurance needs, etc) regardless of shop union status. DM me for details.

Stephanie is a fantastic reporter, and it’s been an honor working with her. This decision by Gannett creates a huge gap in the local news coverage of the Athens area and Georgia as a whole - it’s frustrating and disappointing
I’m sad to say that unfortunately, I am no longer with the Athens Banner-Herald. It is my last day. Today, Gannett has decided to lay off reporters and other vital staff. While we knew that this could happen, I am still shocked and heartbroken for anyone who is laid off today too

Laughing at the murder of kids is repulsive & should be instantly rebuked. But I’m no fan of profanity that implies violence toward women. The Spanish version is even worse. We use these words w/o reflecting on their meaning, further normalizing our cultural denigration of women.
Democrat Beto O'Rourke responded to a heckler at a campaign stop with an expletive after the Texas gubernatorial candidate heard a laugh while criticizing the ease with which the Uvalde elementary school gunman legally purchased an AR-15-style rifle.

How a dangerous word went from the fringes to the mainstream, putting a "target" on the backs of immigrants and immigrant communities like ours.
npr.org
With midterm elections looming, many Republican candidates have embraced increasingly extreme language about immigration. Immigrant advocates worry that such rhetoric stokes fear and hate.

In America, where officials have more often responded to gun violence with thoughts and prayers instead of bold action, you are 18 times more likely to die by firearm than in Canada. Here’s how our northern neighbors responded to a 2020 mass shooting:

After its worst mass shooting, Canada tightened gun control and forced a reckoning on gun violence. What can the U.S. learn from its neighbor?
