Runner Darryl Beardall died this year. He’s commemorated in The NY Times magazine. For 65 years, Beardall averaged about 4,500 miles per year — about 12 miles a day, on average.

50 years ago today, on Sept. 10, 1972, Frank Shorter, a Yale graduate and law student at the University of Florida, won the marathon at the Munich Olympics and America’s “running boom” began.

If race will exceed 75 min, a modest use of carbohydrate drinks & gels (supplying ~30 gm/hr) is recommended. For race durations of 120+ min, carbohydrate supplementation supplying 60–75 gm/hour will help stave off the worst effects of glycogen depletion.
