7/7 We also highlight the need for the development of both standardised guidelines and readily-available tools to quantify and value ecosystem services for NCA.

6/n Overall, the lessons learned from the project indicate that Natural Capital Accounts for local decision-making can be improved by including fit-for-purpose data & valuation methods, considering uncertainties, & incorporating ecological information + spatial aspects.

5/n The results of our work suggest that NCA can be a useful tool to inform policy-making, esp. when the required data are available. However, our research also shows that a number of limitations need to be overcome in order to design more informative Natural Capital Accounts.

4/n …and critically assessed (with representatives of our case study areas) the advantages and limitations of the produced accounts, in order to draw conclusions on the informativeness of these tools for local decision-making.

3/n In our paper, we reviewed the “standard practice” approaches to local NCA and replicated these in two case study areas: Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks (UK). We then tested the sensitivity of the account results to different data and methodologies. And…

2/n NCA is increasingly applied at local scale –at the level of eg. protected areas– mainly by borrowing methods developed at national level, which are, however, not necessarily appropriate or feasible at local scale and may result in inaccurate or incomplete accounts.
