Firefighters from Northrup Grumman’s Volunteer Fire Brigade came to MFRI for live-fire training last week. As one of America’s largest defense contractors, Northrup Grumman has its own on-site fire brigade to ensure safety on their campuses.

First responders from Prince George’s County Fire and EMS trained in vehicle extrication last week using the Jaws of Life, spreaders, and cutters. Now about 45 pounds, the Jaws of Life weighed 350 pounds when the device was initially manufactured for racecar entrapment in 1961.

The Maryland Fire Service Personnel Qualifications Board (MFSPQB) presented a $10,000 donation to the Maryland Fire-Rescue Services Foundation at their annual gala in Annapolis. The Maryland Fire-Rescue Services Memorial Foundation honors Maryland’s fallen heroes.

Training continues at Fort Greely in Alaska! Taking on Trench Rescue Technician, first responders trained in a simulated collapse employing shoring systems to stabilize the trench and create a safe environment for rescue operations.

First responders from Prince George’s County Fire Dept. teamed up to train in Common Passenger Vehicle Rescue. Led by MFRI instructor and PG Fire Lt. Vinny Verdadero, responders stabilized the car and used hydraulic cutters and power and hand tools to disentangle the vehicle.

This week, more than 40 kids from the Prince George’s County COPS Camp visited MFRI for a hands-on introduction to firefighting! They each had the chance to extinguish a fire on their own and then teamed up on the hose to tackle the blazing firepad.
