Cicely also led ethnobotanical surveys, interviewing Kru and Sapo people around our study sites to understand local plant names and uses. 80% of species had local names, and nearly 70% had at least one use, reflecting close human-nature relationships.

We found a brilliant diversity of plants - 378 understory species and 130 tree species across our 54 plots. Forest had more endemic tree and understory plant species--and was more structurally complex--than either oil palm system.

We systematically surveyed trees & understory plants across plots in rainforest, fallowed community farmland with oil palms ('country palm' cultivation), & industrial oil palm farmland. We wanted to understand how oil palm cultivation changes West African plant communities.

Wonderful PhD opportunities with the brilliant Millie Hood at Reading. Having a great supervisor is one of the most important parts of a PhD, and Millie is truly awesome. Apply!
A pair of great *FUNDED PHDs* open @UniofReading If you're interested in finding farming solutions that can mitigate the #climate and #biodiversity crises AND produce food at the same time, arable #agroforestry is a really promising area, and still lots we don't know! 🌳🌾🌳🔍
