Tragic. A humpback whale has been found dead, entangled in a government shark net off the coast of New South Wales, Australia. On its way to Antarctica, it would have suffered greatly, the trauma severe. There are 27 shark nets in Queensland, 51 in New South Wales. Horrific.

Tenerife’s whale sanctuary is unique, fragile, and worth protecting — but without consistent monitoring and meaningful enforcement, its future remains uncertain. https://t.co/bSE1dVV3AD Photo: M Dodds

Sea Me Sardinia association recently conducted a survey in the Gulf of Asinara and rediscovered that 1 of the 3 sperm whales hunting in the canyon was not a new encounter but a whale named Ganymede who they documented 13 years ago in the same area! Photo: Sea Me Sardinia

Fleur Abela is Malta’s new Commissioner for Animal Welfare and states animal welfare is about “responsibility and strengthening protection where animals are treated with dignity and care.” Let's hope she steps up for the dolphins at Mediterraneo. https://t.co/uYw7lJustD

A mass stranding of pilot whales has occurred on a beach at the northern tip of New Zealand’s North Island. Due to the isolated location, condition of the animals, and challenging tidal conditions, the DOC decided against mounting a rescue operation. Majority of whales have died.

It’s been 5 years since Fungie, the solitary sociable bottlenose dolphin, was last seen Dingle Bay, Ireland. First appearing in 1983, he stayed for nearly four decades, then, one day in 2020, he vanished—never to return. https://t.co/Cxezj5Sv8z Photo: Graham Timmins

The impact of fishing gear is an issue that deeply concerns Marine Connection. It's the biggest threat to all cetaceans. A sei whale has just died off the coast of south Korea in a pollock net. Change is easy, all it takes is caring. https://t.co/q3yvRB9osS

Shocking photo of seal entangled in fishing gear. Once again, sterling work by colleagues/marine medics @BDMLR for saving its life. If you care about these remarkable creatures, the most impactful action you can take is to leave fish off your plate. https://t.co/00aBLh8nz8

Dolphin calf freed after becoming entangled in fishing gear off New South Wales, Australia. The line was wrapped around the tail fluke, with seaweed gathering on it. This resulted in the line cutting deeper into the skin - no 10 month old dolphin should have to suffer this.

Monique Barbut is France’s new Minister of Ecological Transition after Agnès Pannier-Runacher’s resignation. Will this bring a change in the fate of the two orcas and dolphins still held at Marineland, Antibes, as the key decisions now rest with her ministry. Updates to follow.

On the coast of Tenerife, 7 tourists were fined after jumping from a boat into the sea to interact with pilot whales - a violation of Royal Decree 1727/2007, which prohibits swimming or diving near the whales. Officials said claiming ignorance of the law wasn't a valid excuse.

24 whales have died in the larger San Francisco Bay Area so far this year. Among these were 21 gray whales, one minke whale, and two unidentified baleen whales. It's suspected that eight of the gray whales died as a result of vessel strikes.
