We already modify media for antibiotic susceptibility testing for certain antibiotics (ex dapto, cefiderocol) to get more actuate results. It stands to reason that certain antibiotic resistance mechanisms (like MBLs) may also require modifications in the media to be accurate.
The study confirm that traditional testing mischaracterizes strains as resistant when they are actually susceptible to CAZ in nutritionally depleted media in vitro & effective in treating infection in vivo. These results suggest that CAZ may remain an effective therapeutic option.
