Back to the blue disk!
10 years after my time as a Postgraduate Intern at the NCAA in Indianapolis – I’m headed back.
I’m so excited to rejoin the staff at the national office as the Director of Championships Social Media.
Don’t just let today be about a hashtag or an empty tribute by a sports team. September 11th first responders deserve the support every single day.
@jonstewart
said it best.
Indiana University is tied with Florida for colleges with the most Olympic medals. If IU was a country, it would be in a three-way tie for 13th in medal count.
2 🥇, 3 🥈 & 1🥉
A reminder (that I really shouldn’t have to make) — the person who runs your favorite team’s social accounts has nothing to do with COVID related decisions &/or protocols.
This is a dangerous way of thinking.
You'll probably say I'm overreacting; there are talented people who cannot afford to be in our industry for "the love of the craft" alone.
Some people in leadership roles actually believe this & won't hire them — a barrier to employment.
I usually don’t post about the racist comments we receive but I’m absolutely fed up at this point.
Hopefully no one thinks less of me for pointing this out.
Just like athletes won’t shut up & dribble, I will not shut up & tweet.
You never know what people are going through.
Please just be kind to others.
To go with the craziness of the last 13 months – I’ve lost all four of my grandparents. It’s been extremely difficult.
Wear a mask. Get vaccinated. Call your loved ones. 🖤
Let’s talk about it:
• We had ~5 minutes.
• It wasn’t the only content on the season being postponed.
• The rest of the tweet added more context.
• Web traffic is down.
• Crisis comm is complex – especially when you’re balancing recruiting, sales, marketing + more.
Hey
#SMsports
friends, can you please have a friendly chat with your coaches and tell them no one can read the statements they put on social when they’re in tiny text (usually all caps) on a graphic?
Just link to the text on your websites, please.
K thanks.
My mom’s dad is basically the only reason why I’m into sports.
He’s been in the hospital since last week, but he watched the football game yesterday. PapPap literally FaceTimed me in the middle because he was shocked at how well the team was playing.
Today we need your prayers.
Sound of crickets.
...only thing your recruits, fans and donors would have received from your team for past five months without your digital, design and video staff.
The number of women in
#smsports
is phenomenal, no doubt – but we still have work to do. People of color are severely underrepresented in all leagues & at the college level.
Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t. There are still plenty of barriers to be broken. Help others along the way. Lift as you rise.
Happy
#NGWSD
. 👊🏾
My parents don’t come to games very often because my Dad is still active duty.
🇺🇸 Proud to be able to “bring my Dad to work” for the
#IUFB
-Northwestern game.
The whole Barst**l Athlete thing is crazy to me.
Athletes are aligning with a brand that might be truly against their values for a “viral” campaign. From what I’ve heard they don’t even get money or merch & no written contract is involved. Wild.
Be choosy. Protect your brand.
@thabreannashow
@hippocrip80
@ehhhmm
Meanwhile.. NBA & NFL teams regularly talk about their athlete’s clothes – to the point that this is sponsored content. Let us have fun on this free app. 😂
Racism isn’t limited to black folks + law enforcement.
There are forms of racism in your neighborhoods. It’s in your athletic departments. It’s on your teams.
It’s too easy to send a tweet condemning the behaviors of others. What are you doing to make a change in your world?
Social media is basically the wild wild west now, but there’s one hill I’ll die on (okay.. way more than one, but still):
The less words in your tweet, the better. Simple but significant.
For two years, Big Shot Rob had Indiana's most successful
@opendorse
post (it's still 9th in impression rate). He was bought in to our athlete first content strategy from the start.
Getting a job in sports was hard (for most of us). Shahbaz made a good point — but now I just see a lot of retweets of his original tweet confirming this & not much else.
What are you doing to help the people behind you? Lift as you rise.
In the spirit of transparency, here’s every sports job I applied to before I got a single call back.
Over two years, I submitted 24 applications to various teams before landing a gig.
I truly believe the process helped me grow more than landing a gig off the bat would have.
You know what’s wild?
Some of you get on this free app & brag about how you’re stacking your digital or creative squad (aka hiring a bunch of new people) & not one of them is a woman. Not a single one.
That’s wild.
When your intern asks if you have pictures of turf for texture on the Instagram Story & you happen to be a digital asset hoarder.
Turf picture from 2021. 😅
Bought a dress with pockets. Wore the pocket dress to work today. Life altering & career changing is an understatement.
Know this.. when I become president all dresses will have pockets.
The only Indiana Mr. Basketball to win the state championship as a player & a coach.
The first Black basketball student-athlete to play in the Big Ten.
The third Black player drafted in the NBA.
A trailblazer & legend.
18 years later.
I’ll forever be proud of my uncle, his search dog & my dad who ran to the disaster zones when called.
Survivors & first responders don’t get enough support – financially, medically or emotionally.
#NeverForget
means taking care of them, as long as they need it.
Crossover season is when the
@CubanCenter
interns really get to shine.
@IUHoosiers
had a monster weekend & without the interns our content just isn’t possible.
📱🎥📸🎨
I’ll probably miss someone but here is who worked home + away games this weekend. ⤵
@maddieheaps
I've literally had interns pulled off of sidelines because they were "distracting" the players during warm ups.
Not right & not fair. Period.
One of the funniest things about being an adult is that there are people who think they know me pretty well.. but they don’t know that I have a twin. 😂😅
Happy birthday to us.
While I’m the only one allowed on the sidelines – so proud of the rest of the social team working remotely for
@IndianaFootball
.
Yes, we zoomed during the game. 😂
Coach Allen valued the
@CubanCenter
from day one. I’ll always appreciate how welcoming & accessible he was – especially during the pandemic when it would’ve been easy to shut us out.
Tweeting support _____ in sports is not good enough.
What are you actively doing to make life + experiences better for minorities? Talk is one thing. Change is another.
Over the last six years working in social media has given me a lot of headaches – but an equal amount of joy.
I’m incredibly thankful for this community, especially my peers in

#B1GSocial
. I couldn’t do this amazing gig without you.
Tomorrow will be a better day. 🖤
I left Indiana when I was 7 & I used to dream about the day that I could move back.
Working for a homegrown head coach who loves this state & representing all Hoosiers is a joy.
