While I am glad people are bringing the hammer down on Expedition 33 fans for this kind of thing, I’m not sure where they were back when BG3 fans were mouthing off like this for a whole year or more
Expedition 33 wipes every single game here and that’s no disrespect. RPGs haven’t had a good story like Expedition 33 in decades nor is the combat as dynamic is E33. It’s okay to say Expedition 33 deserves Game of the year because it does. It made a statement on the industry

@LumpyTheCook I genuinely do not remember BG3 fans being this obnoxious but I did see the double standard of sex/over sexualization being okay in BG3 but not other games which I found funny

@LumpyTheCook It's that crpgs are actually fairly uncommon nowadays compared to their heyday in the 90s. Its competition is like Wasteland 3 or an indie game Ssethtzeentach reviewed. In comparison, there are dozens of big JRPG franchises that release every year.

@LumpyTheCook Imagine my shock when I finally played it years after the hype and discovered that it’s just a competently put together CRPG with a decent enough story and the worst fantasy writing ever.

@LumpyTheCook The thing is most BG3 people were comparing it to other western games (or western RPGs specifically), which people who actually like video games rightfully consider slop anyway. So it was just a better slop. It’s different with E33, everybody’s comparing it to actually good JRPGs

@LumpyTheCook most BG3 never played 1&2, tbh it always surprised me that it was called 3 and not a reboot

@LumpyTheCook Unlike the kind of turn-based RPGs that inspired E33, CRPGs like BG3 are actually a niche genre that didn't get much mainstream attention before BG3 (and largely still don't)

@LumpyTheCook I WAS IN THE TRENCHES pointing out that if they loved BG3 so much they should play Pillars of Eternity Deadfire

@LumpyTheCook BG3 was used as a bludgeoning tool against WRPGs, e33 for JRPGs. Different audiences without a ton of overlap.

@LumpyTheCook All you had to do with BG3 was just correct them on what a turn based games was G, and they had an epiphany usually when you explained what a CRPG was compared to traditional turn based. Also they weren’t the problem then it was TOTK fans upset about BG3 winning GOTY

@LumpyTheCook You can't talk about new games during hype periods because The Fandom(tm) will drown honest critiques with accusations of partypooping, strawman etc. If we consider companies as willing to go as low as paying off "reviewers," they might as well be weaponizing these fandom people.

@LumpyTheCook Because both games look and play differently than each other imo. (I didn't play both so dont take the next one seriously) One is a turn-based JRPG, while the other is somewhat dungeons and dragons. One is going with some realism in mind, while the other is mostly fairytale-ish.

@LumpyTheCook No one went to bat for crpgs in the same way because they're much more niche compared to jrpgs. The average person is much more likely to have played persona than like, encased or wasteland 3 or whatever

@LumpyTheCook Most people who like crpgs have learned to be silent because no one else plays them but Jrpgs have always had this loud vocal fan base due to how popular Final Fantasy became.

@LumpyTheCook It might have to do with BG3 only appealing to certain kinds of tastes from a gameplay perspective, but appealing to casual tastes from a story perspective. It would have also been dumb as hell if totk won when its map is so similar to botw, so there's that.

@LumpyTheCook Because BG3's competition isnt wholesome chungus japanese highschool girl games, so there werent abnoxious contrarians there

@LumpyTheCook I love both games. I'm not even sure why people dislike E33 beyond them not understanding that dodging and parrying (the latter, if you're really good at it, is game changing) are a huge part of gameplay. Did they not know it was very French? That opening made stone cry.

@LumpyTheCook I was going off on BG3 people too. Clair Obscur is the most astroturfed fake fucking game ever. BG3 as bad as it is is at least mostly organically popular.
