The report was in response to the Government's open consultation on toilet provision for men and women and provides design strategies in favour of universal washrooms and changing spaces. It helps address common concerns surrounding safety and privacy.

Last year, I worked closely with our members at @BuildingEqLGBT to produce the following report that provides best practice design and technical evidence from an international scale to support the design of inclusive bathrooms and changing areas.

As designers we have an opportunity to provide spaces that are inclusive to all. We can design better spaces that are barrier-free and can accommodate all non-conforming bodies as well as people of different ages, genders, races, faiths, and disabilities.

Last week, leaked guidance from the EHRC revealed unlawful plans to exclude trans individuals from single-sex spaces unless they possess a Gender Recognition Certificate. Obtaining a GRC is intrusive and difficult. This guidance will be truly damaging to our community.

The current Building Regulations and guidance is simply not enough. We as designers must challenge the bare minimum and design by listening to the lived experiences of the end user.

Interior design is not just about beautiful 'instagram moment' spaces. We as designers have an opportunity to shape the experiences of the end user. I strive to design barrier-free spaces for all and particularly focus my efforts in designing for LGBTQ+ individuals.
