Re: Jimmy G. He is not great, but he is exciting. He plays his heart out. He is a winner. I wish him all the best wherever he ends up. He deserves that from me and 49ers fans.
Did Jimmy do anything in tonight's game that Lance could not have done? People -- including 9ers players and coaches -- apparently said off the record they prefer Jimmy to Lance. Did tonight justify those comments?
In no way do I blame Tart or Jimmy for how he played late in the game for anything. That stuff happens. They made it a game, along with the other 9ers. And it was a great game. Sometimes you lose and no one needs to be a villain.
9ers are bringing in Anthony Lynn as assistant head coach. He is an excellent choice, just a very good coach. When they had the Dwight Clark Memorial at Grace Cathedral, Lynn left Chargers training camp to attend. What a lovely gesture.
Some people say in reference to the 9ers and Rams, it's hard to beat a team 7 times in a row. I agree. But it's even harder to beat a team that has beaten you 6 times in a row, because there's a reason for that streak.
I pick 49ers to beat Rams. 9ers will run the ball and the Rams, whose D line is geared to stop the pass not the run, will tire and expire. Matthew Stafford will make one or two panicky, flaky plays the 9ers will take advantage of
There are things to criticize about the 9ers today, like how Jimmy played or how they handled the 4th quarter, but the hell with all that because -- repeat after me -- a win is a win is a win.
I respect 49ers GM John Lynch but in his postseason presser his comment re: Trey Lance was insensitive bordering on snotty: "Trey's going to have to prove that he can stay healthy." Sure, guy suffers broken leg running up middle and he's injury prone. Give me a break.
Jimmy G is a serviceable QB, nothing more, but against the Packers he had the 9ers in the lead with 38 seconds remaining and the Packers without timeouts. One would expect the defense to hold in that situation. The final failure -- despite Jimmy's 2 turnovers -- was DeMeco Ryan's
As you know, I'm relearning to walk after nerve damage in my left leg and spinal surgery. I started in a wheelchair, but now walk with a brace on my leg and a cane. But in my house I don't use the brace or cane and muddle thru by holding onto the wall and walking slow. Progress!
How much longer can the Giants put up with analytics-obsessed GM Farhan Zaidi who doesn't seem to have a clue about real baseball? Same could be said about Kapler.
As some of you have noted, I actually won a bottle of wine from
@grantcohn
. I had bet that Purdy would finish ahead of Goff in passer rating and despite a bad first half, Purdy came out ahead by two-tenths of a point. Love it.
I write this from experience. The 9ers are moving on from Jimmy. No quarrel there. If they get Aaron Rodgers whoopee! But if they go with Lance, as it seems, it is a leap of faith. He is inexperienced, unproven and no one -- I mean no one -- knows how he will do as a starting QB.
I apologize to Trey Lance and
@grantcohn
. I said Lance doesn't belong on 49ers. Grant disagreed. Lance proved me wrong last night. I may discuss this further with Grant this week but am getting cataract surgery so my schedule is unclear. Just want to go on the record.
Sure, it's good 9ers have Jimmy but Kyle never should have used Lance as a power back. What happened to Lance was guaranteed to happen. Poor thinking by Kyle.
My son,
@grantcohn
is in Texas for the 9ers-Cowboys game. I am happily, gratefully retired. But I'd sure love to be there in the press box sharing ideas with him and watching this game which, I humbly believe, the 9ers win.
Hi everybody. Got out of hospital Friday after 16 days. Had spinal surgery -- good grief. It was successful but I am relearning to use my left leg. Will see all of you Tuesday on the Cohn Zohn with Grant.
Now Purdy is invoking God in his postgame presser. Please don't bring God into this. It's just a game and God does not favor any player or any team -- my firm belief
If Jimmy is through at the 9ers how do you feel about him? I feel he played with guts, helped make the 9ers winners and interesting in 2019, is a gentleman. As a QB he is mid-level. Does some things well, but not enough things, and makes bad mistakes.
Been thinking about 49ers-Packers all day, and I believe 9ers beat Packers. Will run the ball and Packers will not cope well enough. Rodgers is great, but 9ers are loaded and, except for QB -- a big exception -- are best team in league.
With Seattle and Arizona losing the 49ers have a chance to make a big statement against Bills, and to become a player in the NFC West. They must take advantage of this opportunity. Can they?
Mark Davis on leaving Oakland: 'I've already been there in 1982 when we left the first time, so it is not that big of a deal now.' Such a shallow ungenerous statement. He owed Oakland fans more respect and kindness.
I stand 100 percent behind Brian Flores. I believe he is a good coach and an honest man, and his accusations that the NFL does not value black coaches is right on.
I want 49ers to tell Jimmy, 'We brought in this new guy and you and he are in competition to be the starter.' And I want Jimmy to compete with all his heart and see what happens. That competition can only be good for the team
I was impressed with Kyle's calm, Wilks' 2nd half adjustments, Aiyuk, Juice, CMC, of course Purdy and the whole defense for shutting down the Lions in the 2nd half. Really well done. This is a very good team, maybe a great team. We will find out in 2 weeks.
49ers have every chance to be 4-1 before they play a division opponent, time for most of their stars to get well. 49ers fans should not lose heart despite loss of Bosa
My son
@grantcohn
got married last night in Sonoma to the love of his life, Swasti, his UCLA sweetheart. Her family was there, an Indian community originally from Fiji. They are so exotic and colorful and just plain wonderful. My heart is full.
Do you consider the 49ers 4th quarter collapse vs. the Rams a continuation of Kyle's tendency to lose despite having a 4th quarter lead in really big games?
I agree with
@grantcohn
. Shanahan seemed defensive about Lance's injury in his postgame presser and seemed annoyed when reporters, including Grant, lingered on Lance's injury, an enormous and serious topic
I'm puzzled why Kittle wore a t-shirt postgame touting Jimmy. Jimmy isn't playing now and it seemed like a shot at Purdy, not what you want on a team trying to surge around the current QB. Is it possible Kittle just isn't bright?
Slept at my stepson Brian's last night in a beautiful part of Oakland. Came out this morning and some subhuman had stolen the catalytic converter from my car.
Taking a step back for a moment and catching my breath, I wanna say this is one of the most dramatic, exciting 49ers seasons I've witnessed, and I witnessed a lot
I firmly believe 9ers make the playoffs. Is there anyone out there who believes 9ers make it to the Super Bowl. Not with that QB. Not with those corners. Not with that offense.
Bad bad loss for 49ers. And please don't make excuses, that they had injuries, the officiating was bad, etc. The 49ers had no business losing to this crummy outfit, at home or anywhere.
If the final two games come down to Trey Lance, I would feel better about the 9ers chances if Kyle actually had prepared Lance for this moment with in-game play at various times
Question: In what sense do the 49ers need Richard Sherman, who runs as fast as a mail box? And please don't tell me he'll be a coach to the younger players. The 9ers already have coaches. They need players
Just found out
@grantcohn
gave Lance an A-minus. As you recall I gave him a "B". I'm sticking with my grade, which is a good grade but not great. Lance was not great. He was promising. I still love my son, but I will give him a timeout, or he owes me a bottle of wine.
You must understand Kyle blocked great pass rusher with backup tight end and not with an offensive lineman on play where Purdy got hurt. That injury is on Kyle.
49ers played a good game. But they scored no points in the 3rd Q because Kyle passed too much as always when he gets nervous. Ira Miller called me to say Kyle never learns & lost the game because of going brain dead in 3rd Q.
Excuse me but I never thought this was a rebuilding year for the 9ers. I thought they were a Super Bowl contender. Silly me. This is Shanahan's 5th season and he's rebuilding. Very bad. The 9ers should begin thinking about firing him and Lynch, and hiring a GM who hires the coach
What do I think of 9ers loss to LA? Total praise for them. Their season was a wonder of resilience. They played with courage. They were excellent. They happened to lose a game to the surprisingly gritty Rams. Another day they would have beat the Rams. So, yes, praise.
Here's my column on the passing of Dwight Clark I wrote for my old paper The Santa Rosa Press Democrat. I posted it before but not sure it went up. I'm out of practice. Here goes:
I don't know about you, but I wish the 49ers-Seahawks game were today. I can hardly wait. I learn from each game, and I expect I'll learn a ton about the 9ers on Sunday, sure about the QB, but also about the defense, the O-line, running backs, and how Shanahan bounces back.
This is turning into an early ass-kicking. I actually thought the game would be close. Purdy is a pleasure to watch. I haven't been able to say that about a 49ers QB in a long time.
Who is your favorite 49er? Mine is Jimmie Ward because he's a heck of a safety who can cover like a corner. And he has an exuberant personality. I would love to have covered him as a journalist. I'm interested to know your favorites.
