My brother Dan was missing for almost 5 years. Unprecedented public support made me found @MissedAus | The Hope Narratives | 'What's Missing' & 'Matty' podcasts
Australia
Joined July 2011
It's not every day you get the chance to be interviewed by such an incredibly talented writer. It's even more rare that I'm brought to tears reading my own story, since I've heard it so very many times, just never with anywhere near this kind of depth. Thanks for listening, MM-M.
“All through popular culture, missing persons are so closely associated with crime. But that doesn’t add up here. That’s not our situation. It’s a public health issue.” Martin McKenzie-Murray speaks with Loren O’Keeffe, founder of @MPANaus #missingpersons

"I think I've missed him more and more as the years have gone by." That's at the core of this experience - you can't be a missing person without being *missed*. Thanks Erin for covering this vital, heartbreaking story. May it bring Jimmy's family closer to resolution. @missedaus

Every cause needs quirky, committed academics with endless compassion and curiosity like Sarah Wayland. Cannot wait for @mpanaus to beam this training out to the world in the not too distant future 💗 #hopenarratives
Tomorrow I’m recording webinars on #ambiguousloss using the Hope narrative cards, for practitioners, Police and families around the world to access when responding to a #missingpersons investigation. All researchers need collaborators like @DanComeHome ❤️

So thrilled that 'Matty' has made #1 in Aus and Top 10 in so many countries around the world. 400,000 since last week's launch! It's so important that families get to tell their own stories on their own terms, in their own time. We're so privileged to play a part in that process.
Thank you SO much Australia, New Zealand, United States and United Kingdom for all of your wonderful support and recognition of the Matty Podcast by @case_file and @MPANaus If our Matty was still with us, he’d be absolutely chuffed.

Many Australians know about Matthew Leveson's disappearance and his family's harrowing decade-long battle to bring him home. But soundbites in the media from statements outside a court are very different to the stories told with space and time, in the comfort of your own home 💜
Podcasts can be an excellent platform for families of #MissingPersons to share lived experience, broaden the narrative + reclaim ownership of their stories, particularly those of high-profile cases that media can run away with. Very proud to launch Matty today with @case_file 💜

“The not knowing is unbearable. Families who don’t know where their loved one is, they’re dealing with a very unique type of trauma, which is called ambiguous loss.” Founder of @MPANaus Loren O’Keeffe (@DanComeHome) speaks to Martin McKenzie-Murray

A year in the making, I can barely contain myself over the fact these are now out in the world. Undoubtedly the most important project we've ever done. Endless thanks to 44 loved ones who shared their challenges, their coping mechanisms and their ideas of hope 🙏 #hopenarratives
It’s National Missing Persons Week! With international #ambiguousloss expert @sarahlwayland we're very proud to be launching The Hope Narratives -- a world-first therapeutic tool to help the loved ones of missing people: https://t.co/ZP1ICJnXpZ 💗 #missingpersons

So excited about this! A zany idea from a couple of months ago has turned into a very special fundraising challenge for National Missing Persons Week, launching this Sunday 31 July 2022. #customcasey
Hey Casefile fans! Casey here. I’m making a special appearance on social media to let you know about a very special challenge I’ve accepted from @MPANaus.

I know it seems like we live in an age of perpetual outrage, but enough people in this community have been triggered (here and in the UK) that I've written this article: Why @Channel10AU 's new Hunted series hurts families of real missing people https://t.co/9l4e4IZme8
#huntedau

Coming to screens across Australia, Network 10’s new series Hunted is described as seeing “ordinary Aussies take part in a radical social experiment…the most epic game of hide and seek”. This ‘game’...

So extremely proud of our board member @DrJodieWard who was featured in @nytimes over the weekend and will be on @abc730 tonight talking about her DNA Program matching unidentified remains to missing loved ones. Australia is so lucky to have you, Jodes! 🙏 https://t.co/UNCct3ub57

The technique can predict a person’s ancestry and physical traits without the need for a match with an existing sample in a database.

I want everyone in the world to read this masterpiece, but if listening's more your thing, wrap ya ears around @xerinstewart talking about it. Hear here: https://t.co/iGpcLpiDy9 👏👏

Couldn't believe more in the importance of this. Honoured to have been asked to share some of my experience, and look forward to making these guidelines a reality.
Australian media focus on #missingpersons cases has identified that we need media guidelines on safe reporting. To assist those who are missing, left behind and how we invite the community into investigations. My piece in @ConversationEDU

After a day of interviews the one takeaway I want to remind people is that media representations of who goes missing are not indicative of who actually goes missing. We need media guidelines to ensure safe inclusion of all who are missing + vulnerable. #cleosmith #missingpersons

"Spreading awareness for a long-term missing loved one goes beyond the need to remind the public of their likeness; it is the ultimate display of community spirit, showing the family and friends left behind that they are not alone in their search." - Loren O’Keeffe @DanComeHome

Humbled to have been asked for comment on @MissingChildEU's very clever Not Found initiative. Even more excited to have been invited to 'share my expertise' on the topic of long term missing persons with their network of European representatives this Wednesday. MPAN’s growing up!

The shifting sands of COVID and our uncertain future has a name -- liminality https://t.co/Ovs27CCuhB my new paper with @ConversationEDU has just been published via @HealthUNE

Understanding liminality and its origins can provide ways to better understand the foggy, ambiguous space we’re experiencing right now.

This could be the very first step in ensuring families & friends of missing Australians finally get the acknowledgement, and eventually, the support they need. Feeling optimistic that the response we had during our recent Missing Persons Week campaign will make this a reality 💪
Today, our petition to officially recognise National Missing Persons Week was presented to the House of Representatives. It's been referred to the Minister for Home Affairs who now has 90 days to respond. Thanks to everyone who signed. Looking forward @karenandrewsmp's response!

So glad the @FinancialReview has published this brilliantly written article by @CWrightmedia about the 'paralysing practical inertia' that families of long term missing loved ones have to contend with, on top of the emotional and psychological torment. A strong finish for NMPW 👏

Despite the devastating context, it was such a treat to be interviewed by someone with lived experience. Someone who knows what to ask and how. Such an important feature in this weekend's AFR (in print tomorrow) that I can't help but think might lead to big things...
This was a personal and painful article to write, but we have learned with great sadness about the aftermath when a loved one is gone but will never be found. Please consider signing this petition: https://t.co/dtZIA1Zu1i Thanks! @DanComeHome
