5⃣ Prioritizing climate policies and action that tackle root causes is considered key.

4⃣ Support for CDR and SRM technologies hinges on them being tied to credible system-wide decarbonization efforts + their ability to effectively respond to a variety of climate impacts.

3⃣ Tensions in publics’ reflections on the potential contribution of these technologies to climate action include “buying time vs. delaying action”, “treating the symptoms vs. tackling the root causes”, and “urgency to act vs. effects only in the distant future”.

2⃣ Public perceptions are embedded in three broader narratives about transformation pathways, each reflecting varying notions of responsibility: behavior change-centred pathways, top-down and industry-centred pathways, and technology-centred pathways.

1⃣ Nationally varying degrees of perceived personal harm from climate change and climate worry predict support for carbon removal and solar geoengineering.

🎯Relying on qualitative data from 44 focus groups, triangulated with a survey in 22 countries, this mixed-methods study examines the role that climate change beliefs and attitudes towards climate action play in the formation of public perceptions of methods for CDR and SRM.
