We seem to forget that we were once children, that we once moved like children, when does this happen and is it inevitable? When do we stop moving to find joy in our bodies? When do we stop moving to explore our environment? When do we stop using movement full stop?

Praise and applause follow accompanied by hushed comments like “that’s amazing!” “Is that normal?” “I wish I could do that” to which I want to respond with, yes it is and yes you can, or at least you could at one stage of your life.

The shock and awe they express when a child sits comfortably in a full depth squat, their faces aghast and amazed when a child extends their leg fully whilst holding their toes, and don’t even get me started on their reactions to a child putting their foot over their head.

Working with children in the movement space is joyful, interesting and often baffling, but the children themselves are not the cause of my bewilderment, rather the adults are.

Often in a yoga class the teacher will invite students to move freely without instruction. I’ve noticed both as a teacher and student that this causes people to stop moving altogether or look to the teacher for guidance, when did we forget how to just move our bodies? #movement
