Discussions over bail reform at the same time as SCOTUS nomination hearings show that people only want judicial discretion if the discretion matches their opinions.

The issue of non-lawyers as judges is an interesting one in NY. There are some who have made good judges, but many of the misconduct rulings are with non-lawyer judges who do stupid stuff. Case in point:
