I join the racing industry in mourning the passing of Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas. My condolences to his family and many friends. I will always treasure the wisdom and insights that he so graciously shared with me.

The Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes were not only thrilling displays of athleticism and tradition—but also affirmations of our industry’s shared commitment to safety, integrity and progress. We look forward to the final leg of the Triple Crown at next month’s Belmont Stakes.
May was busy at HISA! We released our first quarter metrics report, which included fatality subclassifications. Our team also visited six tracks across the country, including the first two legs of the Triple Crown at @ChurchillDowns and @PimlicoRC.

Our responsibility to protect the welfare of horses and riders must be upheld every day, in every barn and on every track. We’re proud of the progress made to date and look forward to working with each of you to preserve Thoroughbred racing and protect its athletes.
As part of ongoing efforts to maximize safety in Thoroughbred racing, we’ve published data on fatality subclassifications in our 2025 Q1 Metrics Report. We’re working to identify injury risk patterns the industry can use to foster a better sport for all.
