We have some deeply sad and personal news to report. Ruschell Boone, an Emmy award-winning journalist and our beloved colleague here at NY1, passed away Sunday due to complications related to pancreatic cancer. She was 48.

Also… now after working so closely with Lewis Dodley, @bcuza and @patkiernan for so many years, funny how during those few days in 2005, I had felt like I really got to know them. The intimacy of TV news during upheaval and disruption.

I remember thinking “what is this magical station that covers the city so throughly, never goes to sleep and is always on when I push power on my TV?”

The story that turned me into a NY1 viewer! I was just out of college, living in the Village and teaching in Washington Heights and stayed up all night watching @NY1 to see if Mayor Bloomberg would keep schools open if trains shut (they did and he did).
This is a great look at the Dec. 2005 transit strike, and how NY1 fits into the story. Interesting to think about if it could happen again, and what would it even mean if it did. @patkiernan @bobhardt @NY1

This is potentially life-changing news for many kids. I am constantly recommending this audio documentary to illuminate the insanity of many American reading programs and how deeply entrenched the problem is: https://t.co/hDMDVeN3NR

Big news: NYC will mandate elementary schools use phonics-based programs, affecting 200+ schools that will need to make changes Principals usually have wide leeway to pick reading curriculum, but that seems to be ending w/ @the_zim + @yoavgonen

Here she’s obviously channeling a calm public school mom of three, relaxing after an invigorating morning protest on those steps.

Just stumbled upon Zara’s “wistful education reporter on the steps of DOE headquarters, just waiting for a deputy chancellor to comment” shoot.

Unlocked the “Governor Spritzer kicks off new school year” level of the old education reporter desk clean out. (Two years before I was hired for the role @NY1.)

Reached the BlackBerry box level of my old @ny1 desk clean up. “Make today extraordinary with this magical device.” Magical!

Back at it, wondering what to do with these textbooks in English presented to me by yeshiva advocates as evidence that they did, indeed, teach in English. (Also, feel like this exercise has some serious anti-urban bias?)

Cleaning out my desk from a certain era of education reporting dominated by school choice, reform and accountability debates. Such a time capsule bookshelf @NY1!

One reason I love @NY1 is because, when describing the audience at opening night of The Music Man on Broadway, they say things like “schools chancellor David Banks and other celebrities like Anne Hathaway.”
