I have chosen books I love, because we're small there has to be a certain amount of curation. But I do have broad taste (I think). I do like some books by old, white men; but also other genders and ethnicities. What should I have said? What was he looking for that I didn't have?

though may have been frosty. I picked a few books out that were by old, white men but realised quickly that I wasn't going to win him round (and wasn't sure I wanted to). He said, 'your problem is you've chosen books you want to read rather than books for other people'...
