Exciting to see the work of @UCSanDiego spinout company, Navega Therapeutics (co-founded by bioeng prof @prashantgmali & PhD alumna Ana Moreno), mentioned in this @WIRED article. Also a great explainer on epigenetic editing by @emilylmullin!

Instead of deleting genes, epigenetic editing modulates their activity. A new paper tests if it’s able to undo a genetic effect of early alcohol exposure.

Never a dull moment in #SciComm. I wrote a story in 2015 about tech to remove drug-delivery nanoparticles from blood. Now, I'm getting calls & emails from a bunch of folks pleading for help to get rid of infestations of nanoparticles in their bodies, homes, even telephone lines.

It's like they know me!🤣 Requiring people to be in the office can drive out innovation. For many, this isn't a great fit (i.e. those who have caregiving responsibilities; are shy; are productive at odd hours; or were excluded from golf games/happy hours)

One of the perks of working from home with my baby is that I've overcome a lot of my writer's block when putting baby to sleep. Now I just need a BCI to type down all these thoughts for me while baby is asleep and so I don't forget them by the time I get back to my desk.

"For so long, I have been the one to defer to the ideas, expertise, importance of others...But I realize that’s the problem: I am always waiting my turn to be important...we are always waiting our turn to be important." Right on target, @lucy_feldman

Wondering why @EurekAlert doesn't auto-fill PIO contact info when submitting news releases. It would save me about 40 keystrokes each time (and more for those with longer names/emails).

And then there's the other group of people who do things that make my heart sad...and angry. People say stuff like this doesn't define America. But the sad reality is, it actually does...

One of the funnest parts of putting together video is working with awesome grad students (and picking out the sound track). Big shout out to Juliane Sempionatto (@JSempionatto), Muyang Lin (@JackLin62608901) and Lu Yin (@YinLu_CLT)!

“Science was on the ballot and this means that a significant portion of America doesn’t want science." One of the many reasons this election has been pretty depressing already. Is this really the country we live in? https://t.co/YDyvGNj6cz

Hubby & I were taking a walk (BTW, we are Asian-Americans, I'm 9 months preggo). Keeping our social distance from others, a man (elderly, white) passed by saying in a snarky tone, "You gonna name your kid COVID?" Did we just experience #COVID19-fueled anti-Asian racism?

...they'd like to put more time into teaching & service/outreach, they must hold off and focus on research because that's what carries most weight on the tenure file. That breaks my heart. Institutions, please realize the ramifications of touting research > teaching & service.

Later as a grad student, I gained more insight into just how low undergrads really are on most professors' radar. And while there are professors who do put teaching and service on par with research, they are unfortunately the minority. I've heard several express that as much as..
