The FoL has embarked on a number of projects to reintroduce locally significant indigenous species back to the Liesbeek. Palmiet is renowned for its practical attributes rather that aesthetics. The plant plays an important ecological role in preventing erosion #LiesbeekLearning

Did you know? The Liesbeek River, which is less than 9 kilometres long, is the oldest urbanised river in South Africa, and in the most biodiverse city in the world, Cape Town. #Liesbeek #rivers #culturalheritage #urbanecology #history @FNF_Africa

Historically, they were a vital water source & they provided fertile floodplains, transport corridors etc. The resulting urbanisation has meant that many of our rivers have been transformed beyond recognition, & are no longer able to provide those initial benefits. @FNF_Africa
