My latest @NewsroomNZ column showcases what local entrepreneurs are doing to tackle climate change

Opinion: There are many things we can do ourselves to reduce the impact we have on the environment, writes Lianne Dalziel

My @NewsroomNZ column reminds us that Labour Day is about recognising workers rights. I watched the movie, Pike River, to commemorate the day and to honour the 29 lives that were lost almost 15 years ago. Their deaths were avoidable. When will we learn?
newsroom.co.nz
Opinion: A Royal Commission report said law and attitude changes were needed to avoid similar tragedies; a new movie offers that hope, argues Lianne Dalziel.

Don't look here, look over there! My latest @NewsroomNZ column reflects on voter turnout in local elections
newsroom.co.nz
Opinion: Despite a pre-election promise of devolution and a commitment to subsidiarity, the Government has done nothing but dump on local government since taking office

My latest @NewsroomNZ column reflects on the last day of hearings on pay equity changes, which one submitter called ‘a ramraid no one was expecting’. You can continue to follow the work of the People’s Select Committee online https://t.co/xw3i3vlurp.

Opinion: One woman was angered the Government thought an overworked, undervalued, and exhausted group wouldn't fight back

My @NewsroomNZ column asks how many people have to die before decision makers take notice of what needs to be done? Foam-filled furniture is everywhere and yet the risks are not even disclosed at point of sale. Self-regulation has failed this mum.
newsroom.co.nz
Opinion: Repeated recommendations and warnings about flammable foam-filled furniture have been disregarded for years. The death of Lizzy Marvin shows it's time to take notice, writes Lianne Dalziel.

My latest @NewsroomNZ column reminds us that when we are thinking about regulatory reform and the deregulation zeal which we are seeing here, we must remember #GrenfellTowerFire. It wasn’t a single regulation; it happened because a system failed.
newsroom.co.nz
What a deadly London fire can teach our politicians about systemic failure and the risks of deregulation, according to Lianne Dalziel

My @NewsroomNZ column again reminds us that anniversaries are important opportunities to reflect - when will we ever learn
newsroom.co.nz
Opinion: The devastation in New Orleans in 2005 and the earthquake that preceded the deadly one in Christchurch in 2011 were both missed opportunities to learn from

My latest @NewsroomNZ column repeats the question ‘when will we ever learn’? The terms of reference for any Royal Commision of Inquiry should be subject to a transparent process. We need to look back not to blame but to understand
newsroom.co.nz
Opinion: What is the point of hearing from government politicians of the day? The inquiry has already received all the information it needs from them, writes Lianne Dalziel

My latest @NewsroomNZ column was written after the first day of hearings of the People’s Select Committee to hear evidence about the changes that were made to pay equity without a parliamentary select committee.
newsroom.co.nz
Opinion: The first day of hearings at the people's select committee heard from those groups who had their claims wiped out overnight with no consultation, let alone notice, writes Lianne Dalziel

My @NewsroomNZ column asks again when will we ever learn? 80th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima on Wednesday and Nagasaki tomorrow. I visited both cities this year and they have left a deep impression as cities dedicated to peace.
newsroom.co.nz
Opinion: We must use this anniversary to ask what we can do to stop nuclear weapons ever being used again. The stakes have never been higher.

My latest @NewsroomNZ column is a reminder that submissions on the NPS-Natural Hazards closes on Sunday! This is important and deserves attention
newsroom.co.nz
Analysis: This is a quick and dirty approach to something that needs to be addressed properly, writes Lianne Dalziel. It is another disaster in the making.

My latest @NewsroomNZ column asks for better approach to natural hazards and managed retreat. The recommendation that the government announce a stop to buyouts in 20 years has our attention but it’s not the answer. We need to work out a better way together
newsroom.co.nz
Opinion: The idea that we should not expect the government to bail out homeowners in the event of climate disasters has sharpened minds at last, writes Lianne Dalziel

Last week’s @NewsroomNZ column highlights the importance of shedding light on the pay equity changes that were not able to be publicly scrutinised. The irony of a delay in responding to my OIA request due to the need to consult was not lost on me!

The workplace relations minister has decided to delay her response to my request for information about options she was given for navigating current pay equity claims and a future approach to pay...

My Newsroom column led me to look at pay equity changes and suggests that when there is no regulatory impact analysis and no supporting evidence, a fast-tracked budget-sensitive decision is going to raise serious questions about process and motive.
newsroom.co.nz
Comment: The move in the 90s from collective bargaining to individual contracts made it difficult to address systemic gender discrimination. And now, once again, it seems to be about the money saved...

My @NewsroomNZ column reminds us that we were promised ‘world class’ emergency management legislation. Discussion document disappoints. Submissions needed by 13 May.

Fascinating talk @IlanKelman @UCNZ how does climate change affect disasters? Having read #DisasterByChoice it was great to hear him in person

Seems appropriate to post my @NewsroomNZ column today. People are more aware of the values that make life worthwhile rather than the ‘what’s in it for me’ attitude that comes with consumerism. Today we commit to peace as we honour those whose lives were sacrificed to conflict.
The pope's counter to Kiwi consumerism Pope Francis wrote about ‘indifference induced by consumerism’. So let’s protect ‘holy days’ like Easter and Anzac for families and communities. https://t.co/Yef4lIxgPS

My @NewsroomNZ column analyses aspects of @Netflix drama series Adolescence. It’s a powerful drama but, in my opinion, not an educational tool for secondary schools. It raises many complex issues that would be challenging to address in the classroom
newsroom.co.nz
Comment: It's understandable why British PM Keir Starmer has endorsed Netflix making its phenomenally successful drama available free to schools, but more harm than good could result, argues Lianne...
