Nice write-up by @faunalytics of insightful study by @LexisHLy and @dr_prot of how varied & inconsistent shelter intake data can be. Dovetails with @sacanimaldata data, highlighting need for internal & external standardization. https://t.co/QSQ2EhacjN

This study suggests that shelter staff vary in how they describe the details of animal surrenders, which can have consequences for the animals themselves.

New article from @LexisHLy, @dr_prot, and colleagues analyzing 2017 survey data from U.S. animal shelters! Procedures of adoption events varied and some characteristics were more common among larger organizations. Some methods of selecting adopters may allow for avenues of bias.

Our new study is now published (open access thanks to @ASPCA)! Thank you to everyone who shared and participated in the survey :)
Data collected at animal shelter intake is used to research populations and inform management practices. But is this data consistent? @LexisHLy & @dr_prot found low agreement in data input across shelter staff in a new study. Read here: https://t.co/4104VNrtI7

@UFAW_1926 - ~85% of animals were diverted (e.g., rehomed or kept by owner), ~15% surrendered to shelter - Characteristics predicting diversion similar to in-shelter research (younger, smaller, purebred, no behav issues etc.) - Owners w/ longer time to rehome more likely to divert pets
