6/7.Our results show:.1. sex ratios need to be measured throughout the breeding season.2. drones are better than boats for surveying in many situations.3. the sex ratio shifts from male-biased to female-biased.4. drones are really cool

@MonashBiol.5/7.The drone also has the advantage that it can survey in areas like the reef crest, which are unsafe or inaccessible for boats.

4/7.We saw more turtles per minute when surveying with the drone than with the boat and the drone had the advantage of not disturbing turtles and causing them to dive. We consider using the drone to be a much less invasive technique that gives a more accurate survey result.

#surveys #SexRatios.3/7.The sex ratio at the start of the season was male-biased in both boat and drone surveys and we saw many mating pairs, but in the middle of the season the males had migrated away from the area and the sex ratio was heavily female-biased.

#drones.2/7.At the start and middle of the breeding season we surveyed from the boat inside the lagoon and counted turtles. Sex was identified by the length of the tail. We also launched a small drone immediately before or after boat surveys to spot turtles from the air.

#SeaTurtleTalks .'Eye in the sky: Using drones to spot and sex turtles'.1/7.Finding turtles at sea is hard but we need to count males and females to work out sex ratios. We compared surveys done by boat and by drone at Heron Island to see how sex ratios changed during the season
