"There is no statute or precedent which establishes the existence of such a duty of care owed by a university to a student...(HHJ Rallton 2002) Abrahart vBristol University. UK government either cannot read, hasn't bothered to look at judgement OR wants to deceive? You decide?
@Dying4aDegree @GillianKeegan @HoCpetitions So the Govt’s response is “there’s no problem to be solved”?! Very sad indeed. It makes me so angry when we highlight where there are preventable suicide deaths and the reply is the ‘rate’ is relatively low. Why would that be a reason not to act? #SuicidePrevention

@BirkbeckUoL @ICPRtweet @LeeFryatt @LeeFryatt says families share a frustration with the weakness of coroners’ prevention of future death notices - designed to warn public bodies of risk & save lives. Families want lessons learnt but Lee says of the prevention notices, ‘they might as well be thrown in the bin’.

We never got to meet the new Minister and there may be a new one again come July 5. But our stance doesn't change. We need the fair treatment of students, so that they do not experience foreseeable harm through the actions or omissions of #HEPs, underpinned by law.

🧵1 year ago today we headed to #10DowningStreet to deliver our petition, signed by over 128k people, calling on the government to enact a #StatutoryDutyofCare for students in #HE. A year on, and progress is still slow. But there IS progress. 1/4
So great to work with this amazing group yesterday as we handed in our 128k+ petition for a #StatutoryDutyofCare in #HE to @10DowningStreet and lobbied MPs & Peers in #Parliament. We're the club no-one wants to join, but are strong, focused and cohesive. #LearnNetwork #Forthe100

I'm a part of @halfon4harlowMP's #HEMHIT initiative. This must outlast the minister, and should now focus on a #StatutoryDutyofCare to ensure all its excellent outputs are mandated rather than discretionary spend in an #HE landscape pared back into the financial bone.
🧵While We in #TheLEARNNetwork were unable to convince @halfon4harlowMP of the need for a #StatutoryDutyofCare in #HE, he at least was doing something through #HEMHIT to improve mental health provision in our #HEPs - and we were still making the #SDoC case. 1/3

Congratulations on your appointment as education Minister @LukeHall - we look forward to your support in driving for a #StatutorydutyofCare for students in #HE - voluntary measures involving discretionary spend in a sector with massive financial challenges just don't make sense.

Daughter informed today that her secondary school is imposing one " toilet pass a day". No more. Seems draconian for modern ed? Victorian power crazed head teachers? Are teachers similarly confined?
bbc.co.uk
Newsround has heard from children that going to the toilet during school is causing many problems for pupils, teachers and parents. We asked what should be done about it.

Coroners have significant potential to ensure all preventable deaths are learnt from. Post vention is the first step for Prevention. A national oversight mechanism could create a platform for greater learning and accountability. Please consider supporting this .
Every year hundreds of people die preventable deaths in state custody or care. Yet life-saving recommendations are repeatedly ignored. We asked bereaved families why #NoMoreDeaths is so important to them. Take action now to help protect lives. https://t.co/w3RWFBN9jS

Police must be careful not to stigmatise those who call police in crisis. Often police are called because appropriate mental health services are simply not there. Police have a duty to protect as well as investigate. Crisis is govt failure to invest in services.
We must focus on crime not mental health, says police chief https://t.co/dxCWcL3Yoe

Finally a definitive answer. Natasha's parents always knew. @BristolUni forced a bereaved family to fight for the truth. @TheLearnNetwork continues to support the call for a statutory duty of care. We know many other families have been failed by our universities.

Students who die by suicide may not have conventional risk factors. Deaths cluster at times of arrival & exams. Only 11% are in contact with MH services, suggesting need for closer working between universities & NHS. Our new report @NCISH_UK.
NEW @NCISH_UK #AnnualReport2024 our key messages sheet summarises findings on some of the important groups this year: autistic people & pts with ADHD, in-pts <25, students aged 18-21, pts with a one-off assessment &pts who died in public locations #MentalHealth #SuicidePrevention

Research is vital if we are to develop evidenced based interventions that support the bereaved. Postvention is prevention.
Would you or someone you know be interested in taking part in research looking at a new form of therapy? Researchers @ucl are inviting those who have been bereaved by suicide to participate. More info below, and express your interest here: https://t.co/oS7z3F9Dx7

What role should staff play in preventing student suicide? @jim_dickinson makes valid observations. Time for compulsory training? Time to review old models of thinking? Current approaches have again failed a student in crisis. Time for change. https://t.co/sk0MIu7Axs via @wonkhe

@jordanlegacyUK It’s fantastic to have reached the crucial 10,000 signatures mark - so the Government must respond to our petition proposals. But our petition will still be open until 19 January, and more signatures sends a bigger message! for #SuicidePrevention ! https://t.co/PoPp9K6I9m

This has been a long campaign for the Abrahart's and every other family that supported the campaign for a duty of care. I hope the court finally provides clarity for students and families so that all universities have a clearly defined responsibility.

A High Court case is looking at whether universities owe a duty of care towards their students.
