More than happy to share this: a special issue on Fanon in MENA, resulting from a workshop in Tunis last year I attended with great scholars/colleagues. My piece is a comparative reading of Fanon & Mahdi Amel. Please share widely 🙏🏼.

I really enjoy reading this book. Yet, so far, from the authors 3-fold analytical framework (see introduction), 2 really dominate the narrative: "foreign intervention" & "local forms of authoritarianism". Still waiting for more attention to the 3rd, "agency of everyday people".

Fawaz Gerges laying out his perspective, arguing against purely "internalist" or "externalist" explanations. He emphasizes the dialectical relation of colonialism/foreign intervention & local authoritarian politics to make sense of the contemporary Middle East

We are witnessing the sultanization of US politics under Trump. The world’s most powerful regime, the technological most advanced economy are ruled by a premodern form of a sultanistic regime as Max Weber lucidly described almost 100 years ago.

So far the chapter I enjoyed the most: it traces the central place that sovereignty over the oil economy had for anti-colonial nationalist projects in the middle east & looks at the disturbing role of US-imperialism in this context.

This analogy is completely missing the point. It's not about changing the name "Syria" (i.e. a nation state), but the qualifier "Arab", as this is an expression of Arab supremacy - a remnant of Arab nationalism - in the context of a multi-ethnic region & society.

@qunfuz2 There are many non Germans in Germany too, and non French in France and non English in England. Should we change the names of these countries too?.

After reading 1/3 of »Crude Capitalism«: I wish there was more attention to the class struggle aspect & workers' experience/perspective in general within the oil economy. Maybe in the following chapters. ? Overall it's still a remarkably good book!

4 people assumed I was Lebanese after I gave a talk on Mahdi Amel's thought. I guess the remnants of identity politics discourse are still present.
