For a year, my colleague @ScheckNYTimes and I looked into why domestic workers from across East Africa, who are promised jobs and a better life in Saudi Arabia, continued to face abuse, starvation and death. Here's what we found.

The situation in alFashir is getting worse and worse: even animal feed is becoming too expensive, the barriers the RSF has dug around the city have been widened, and the hospital is running out of gauze as missiles rain down. It costs $1500 for a family to leave. Our story below.

China has racked up a $60 billion trade surplus with Africa so far in 2025, nearly surpassing last year’s total, as Chinese companies redirect trade to the region while President Trump’s tariffs crimp the flow of goods into the United States.

Already this year, China’s trade surplus with Africa is nearly as big as all of 2024, a sign of how President Trump’s tariffs are reshaping the flow of goods.

Whatever's happening in Karura shouldn't be taken lightly. In 2019 with @AfUncensored we did this investigation at how much forest cover Kenya's lost, Karura included Between 1957 and 2005 nearly 75,000ha of forest cover was wiped out. That's roughly Nairobi's size!
