PS2 Launch Era Mega-Thread:
Over the last couple months I've made individual threads about every PS2 launch title in release order so I figured I should make a Main Thread of sorts of them all in one easy to find spot!
I'll be adding to it as I work through the titles. Enjoy!
Bro you don’t understand, I’m such a fucking dweeb that when I’m sad I just park a car on the pier in Portland in GTA3 and listen to the classical station and wish it was the early 2000s again while the digital sun rises.
As I get older I'm all about the small details when I play games. Like you can see Max's breath when he exhales when he's out in the cold; also these nighttime winter vibes are unmatched.
Hey man, just got a PS3!!! Have it hooked up to my very period accurate (its 2008) TV! Even went out and hot component cables for the best fidelity! (I’m delusional)
We need to go back to dedicated pieces of hardware to make up your entertainment center. There’s just something so tactile and compelling about tech like this compared to chucking Spotify up on the Bluetooth speaker
I return to Fallout 4 and I'm still plagued with the mystery of why, despite these IMMACULATE vibes, I just can't play for more than 15 minutes without getting bored.
To this day I'll say the Fallout 3 tunnels got so much undeserved hate. The atmosphere and just claustrophobic and spooky vibe genuinely scared me when I first walked through them. Not to mention the eerie ghoul screams echoing from the darkness oof, so good.
Unpopular Opinion: The GTA series thrives in the Liberty City setting. The bleak atmosphere and darker stories are way better than the glitzy neon soaked Vice City and the superficial faux rich feel of San Andreas with it's empty feeling world.
Found a super poignant moment while exploring Georgetown in Fallout 3. You can command this offline Mr Handy to read the 'kids' a bedtime story and he recites "There Will Come Soft Rains" by Sara Teasdale and it just makes for this super haunting and punchy moment.
BEHOLD!! The 100% COMPLETE black label and Greatest Hits versions of every PS2 launch title released in the year 2000 in North America arranged in release order. Took about three years but I’m super happy to have them all.
Also behold the baby beginnings of the 2001 collection.
Went to bed at 11PM and woke up at 3AM feeling rested. All I can think of is this section from the Rise FM broadcast in GTA3.
TIME HAS NO MEANING ANYMORE!!
(i will crash at 11am and wonder why i'm so tired)
Behold (roughly) 25% of all the PS2 games released in 2001 in release order! January and February are complete and the other months are in various states of completion.
After watching
@SaveAesthetix
stream last night I got a massive craving for some classic GTA vibes, so you know I just had to cruise Little Haiti to feel some ...

I've never really played Batman Arkham Origins but having just started it on PC I'm captivated by this smoke effect, I love how it just wraps around Batman as he moves through it
Dickerson Tabernacle Chapel
Fallout 3
Found east of the Deathclaw Sanctuary, you can find the Reservist's Rifle here along with a copy of Guns & Bullets.
I had some Radscorpions spawn in here while trying to fight the lone wastelander hiding out in the chapel.
After literal YEARS of on and off troubleshooting I finally got San Andreas running smoothly. The fix? A fucking Windows compatibility mode on the .exe
It’s always such an eerie liminal vibe when the original World Trade Center towers are in games. Like this is the first Midnight Club and you can just do donuts in the square at the foot of the towers.
@HarrisDamn
Its so good, even in the subway level you can just turn the showers on. Is there a reason? Absolutely not. Will I do it on every playthrough? Absolutely.
If anyones ever making a stealth game/RPG with stealth elements please make a negative trait called “creaky joints” where there’s like a 15% chance every lower joint will crack and pop when you use steps while sneaking and attract the attention of the guards.
I’m almost certain
@MemoryCard_8MB
mentioned this in the past but one of the coolest things about Gungriffon Blaze is how they handled the ingame model viewer. It’s basically like opening a miniature model kit, including a cool little house and army men for scale!
I've spent the weekend trying to figure out why Fallout 4 doesn't click for me and I'm still not sure why. In theory it checks all the boxes but it just doesn't stick the landing? Does anyone else feel this way? Or if it's your fav Fallout tell me why!
If I ever amount to any level of success as a writer I hope I keep this mentality. I just write stuff but mostly care about hockey and playing PS2 games
"Look, I'm not a master of anything,” said Halloween and The Thing director John Carpenter in a recent interview "I just want to play video games and watch basketball. That's all I care about doing. I don't want to bother anybody."

This is the turn of the millenium equivalent of 100+GB game sizes. As a sports game imagine the AUDACITY of requiring nearly 3000KB of save data space on my poor petite 8MB Memory Card!
I swear cruising late night California and listening to old 1940s LAPD cop dramas is like a balm on a fresh burn. American Truck Simulator never fails to blow my mind at how perfectly it captures that late night road trip vibe.
I would sell an organ and/or a year of my life for another LA Noire type game. Have it in Chicago or New York or even Miami in the 70s/80s please I just need a fictional cop that hates their life as much as I do while also losing himself in the case they couldn’t close.
“Are you depressed? You’ve been acting a bit weird and distant.”
“Nah dude I’m cooling.”
(I started an ETS2 company based out of Hungary and I’m listening to sad vaguely European rap music)
@MillenialPCAest
I honestly miss these days sometimes. I remember getting fallout 3 and the original borderlands running on my crummy lil Dell laptop. Was it jank? Absolutely. But it also helped form some of my fav gaming memories in middle school
@KrisBN_
The subways are also surprisingly lengthy! Like there’s abandoned sections with full on shanty towns and small shelters and fires. Crazy amount of effort and ressources for an area most players have never spent time in
You may be cool, but you'll never be Wayne Static in a makeshift Batsuit, performing in the Batcave with AMV style Batman Beyond clips playing in the background.
Fingerbones (2014)
One of the first games from
@DUSKdev
, this free horror experience was released back in 2014. The upsetting/unsettling sound design was the highlight for me and definitely reminded me of the claustrophobic soundscapes from their latest title, Iron Lung.
Would anyone be interested in a small thread about each title with some footage and/or pics to go along with it? I spend my evenings just sitting in the dark anyway so it could make for a fun lil project!
Morning all, the PS2 launch era comfy cozy playlist is completed! Why not snuggle up on a chilly Saturday morning, have some waffles, and enjoy the vibes:
Okay so you know when games make like a funny baby mode graphic. Well as a kid I remember seeing this and was like ‘why yes I am a kid and am small this mode is for me’. I saw ZERO fault in the logic and only now I’m realizing it could come off as patronizing if you’re older.
This is very cool, I can't even lie. Being able to play the game at way higher resolutions I'm noticing so many cool little fine details! In Wild Wild Racing, if you're using manual transmission your driver actually has a little shift animation when you shift!
