✨ Regular ovulation is how women make the hormones estradiol and progesterone—important for overall health, not just reproduction. ❌ By suppressing ovulation, most hormonal birth control switches off estradiol and progesterone—and does NOT replace them. #righttoovulate

There’s way more to the ovaries than follicles and egg cells. They’re also home to nerves (particularly sympathetic nerves), glial cells (yes, like in the brain!), and fibroblasts that provide structure and support. A new study suggests those “supporting” cells may play a key

As yummy as chia pudding is, it’s not a protein breakfast on its own. A standard serve of chia seeds gives only about 5 grams of protein (nowhere near the 25-40 grams women need) You can bump that up slightly with almond milk (+1 g) or nuts (+3–5 g), or make it genuinely

Researchers say iodine supports ovarian health by regulating gene expression and protecting granulosa cells from oxidative stress and apoptosis. This lines up with my decades of clinical observation that iodine can promote healthy ovulation.

And one of the very first signs of perimenopause is when those progesterone days start to wobble.

Because progesterone raises body temperature, you can track it with a thermometer or a wearable. More high-temperature days = more “progesterone days” = more of progesterone’s benefits for your uterine lining, brain, breasts, and immune system.

You can also measure progesterone with a blood test or at-home urine test, but timing is everything. Your peak progesterone will be mid-luteal — about 7 days after ovulation and 7 days before your next period. That might be “day 21” in a 28-day cycle, but in a shorter or longer

A great way to assess progesterone is to think in terms of progesterone days — the days you actually make progesterone. More progesterone days mean more of its benefits for your uterine lining, breasts, brain, and immune system. That’s why temperature tracking (BBT charting) is

@LaraBriden Body literacy is key not just for patients but for providers as well. It’s time for a change in mindset: the menstrual cycle as a vital sign is not just a catchy slogan but a way to practice high quality medicine that values & understands the unique design and needs of female

For example, it’s completely normal for estradiol to drop to menopausal levels during the period. Of course, high estrogen is not the ONLY cause of heavy bleeding. With this post, I only mean that IF flow is heavy (for whatever combination of reasons), it's evidence that there

Heavy menstrual bleeding is a clear sign that estrogen was high for most of that cycle—even if it's low on a day you happened to test. The symptom speaks for itself, which is why body literacy (understanding your cycle) can be more important than lab work. #bodyliteracy
