Could not be a bigger contrast between Quebec and Ontario announcements today. Legault himself speaking at length about all the issues (excellent communicator), curfew at 9pm enforced by police (fines in thousands), schools closed until Jan 17th, all theatres/restaurants closed.

Legault says “we have to protect the unvaccinated from themselves.” Vaxipass required for places of worship, he is keen to expand it to everything.

@LapointeShaw Yes, thank god to be in Ontario. Where you can choose to be hyperbolic on your own account, and others can move forward.

@LapointeShaw @RemindMe_OfThis in 6 weeks please. Going to guess that Ontario does materially the same, or better, as Quebec

@LapointeShaw Quebec has an intelligent, educated, articulate Premier who made difficult decisions for restrictions starting on New Year's Eve. Delivered news no one wanted to hear with restrictions that nobody likes. Because it was the right thing to do RIGHT NOW, and it will save lives.

@LapointeShaw Nice. It may be an unpopular decision, but it's rooted in science, and they've been decisive about it instead of disappearing into cottage country.

@LapointeShaw It is quite something he curfewed effective tomorrow at 5pm and didn't push for the 1st. I think it's a more serious signal to have done that.

@LapointeShaw The atrocious pandemic response by Legault over the past two years has been a monstrous failure, resulting in some of the highest infection/death rates in the world. The fact that he is finally forced to act by the imminent collapse of our health care system is not a good thing.

@LapointeShaw @namshine Living in Quebec, I want to push back on this. The curfew did not necessarily actually work last year (it coincided with the beginning of vaccinations), and was never formally studied by any organization. The mental health toll was devastating.

@LapointeShaw @namshine Also, police-enforced curfews affect primarily the unhoused and led to a rise in femicides throughout the course of the year. Let's not forget that the CAQ is an authoritarian, conservative party and a broken clock is right twice a day.

@LapointeShaw @inky_mark Quebecs Omi must be distinct for a 9pm curfew. Ontario’s Omi doesn’t hit until after 11pm.

@LapointeShaw Curfews are pointless though.

@LapointeShaw @peggy_blair From the 3-month healthcare worker training program in early 2020 through the latest protocols Legault always seems on top of things (whether you agree w/him or not.) Ontario has had to watch Ford be repeatedly dragged to the most basic pandemic decisions. No plans. Kenney, too.

@LapointeShaw @Ojibray Quebec’s health care system is on the verge of collapse. Not the example of doing it right you want to use. Slow on boosters. Slow on shutting everything back down. All to save Christmas, because we are so laical. 🙄🙄😡😡
