Caustic cyanide solutions put operators at risk of serious injury if molten salt contacts their skin. Parts with unsealed seams or complex geometries can trap the salt solution even after rigorous rinsing. 7/x.

Salt bath nitriding —also known as ferritic nitrocarburizing (FNC)— is one of the most common ways to harden the metal, but it has somewhat fallen out of favor because of safety and toxicity issues. 6/x.

Due to toxicity issues, salt bath nitriding has somewhat fallen out of favor with industry in favor of gas nitriding or plasma nitriding. Nitriding is a popular case hardening technique renowned for the qualities it delivers at relatively low process temperatures. 5/x.

Nitriding is commonly used for low-alloy steels, as well as titanium, aluminum, and molybdenum. Typical applications include gears, crankshafts, camshafts, valve parts, and more. 4/x.

Nitriding hardens the outer layer of a metal by adding nitrogen to its surface. The added nitrogen combines with iron and other alloying elements in the metal’s composition, forming hard metallic nitrides, while the interior of the part remains relatively softer. 3/x.

The Chattanooga fire department has added that the incident involves a salt bath nitriding line. Large cylinders contain a hot solution that reacts with water. It appears there was a chemical reaction, causing a fatal explosion. 2/x.

The @chemsafetyboard announced this week that the agency has deployed a team of chemical incident investigators to investigate the fatal fire that occurred last Thursday, May 30, at the TS USA liquid nitriding facility in downtown Chattanooga, TN. 1/x.
