The building remains owned by @LWCSBoston to this day! Baldwin’s legacy is singular and her work remains relevant.

Those women developed the first newspaper for & by African women. In 1920, Baldwin put the downpayment on 558 Mass. Ave - a space that would promote cultural pride & education while also housing generations of Black women attending college in Boston, including Coretta Scott King.

The Women’s Era championed the issues of all African Americans: the anti-lynching movement, civil rights for Black people and voting rights for women, along with education and employment opportunities.

Among them were civil rights leaders W.E.B. DuBois and William Monroe Trotter. With other influential women of her generation, she co-founded the Women’s Era Club, a nationally influential group.

She understood the need for safe spaces, and regularly opened her home to Boston’s Black intellectuals and social activists, including offering weekly readings and discussions to Black students attending nearby Harvard University who were not welcome in study circles.

A anti-lynching activist, Baldwin fervently spoke out for civil rights for Black people and women’s rights, advocating for improved youth education to improve both causes.
