Pulling off razor sharp comedy about a very serious subject is no mean feat and in this Shelfie video, @Nussaibah Younis shares some of the books that helped shape her electrifying debut novel, Fundamentally: https://t.co/cv6EXMk21n

What a gorgeous launch for Ali Smith’s Gliff at @PortyBooks last night. Hard to imagine a more joyful author, bookshop or cover. Reading should let us go inside somewhere else without ever leaving ourselves, says Ali, & the physicality of this book reflects that when you open it.

The book I struggled most to set down this summer. It’s gone with me on trains, through parks, in baths, and it has ruined my social plans. I adore it. Please read it so we can talk about it.
If you haven't read James McBride's The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store, what are you waiting for? Out today in paperback from @Waterstones

They’re all laughing! They’re asking her questions. They’re talking jobs and family and travel and truly joyous and painful stuff about layoffs and complicated family backgrounds. Everyone is smiling and nodding. *Who is this woman and how can I be her when I grow up?!*

She starts asking them questions. One guy answers. Everyone sits up straighter. The other two start engaging. She’s asking everything you can think of and really listening to the answer and asking good follow up questions. No, wait for it…

All the guys are furiously, determinedly manspreading. Like on principle. To prove a point. There is a way to sit that will make them all more comfortable. They do not do it. They are making each other miserable. Things are tense. Wait for it…

On a packed train with 3 guys refusing to move to make space for a woman to take a free seat. One tried to insist she climb over them to sit between the another dude’s legs. With complete calm she said, ‘no you sit there. Come now. I will not sit there, you can.’ Wait for it…

I cannot stop thinking about this horror. This @nytimes piece is one of the more thorough on the wider context of femicide. We should have spent this Olympics talking about real, culturally-nuanced dangers facing women, not drumming up panic over hormones.

The athlete, who officials said was set on fire in Kenya by a man with whom she was in a relationship, competed in the women’s marathon at the Paris Olympics.
