Today's discovery: more than 40% of residents of North and South Dakota live east of Minnesota ('s westernmost point). (Hat tip to u/Llcmn on Reddit for the initial insight: https://t.co/YXlZCoiDPw)

Beautiful interview. Successfully parrying of every logical fallacy defense and forces actual conversation to be had. There’s still a line of argument to be had about full defense of 2A but requires acknowledgment that needless death is the cost. Owing it is often untenable tho.

State Sen. Nathan Dahm (R-OK) has penned several bills loosening gun restrictions, including the nation’s first anti-red flag law. He thinks these bills protect the Second Amendment – and that they make us safer. We think it's probably one or the other. Watch it on @AppleTVPlus.

What's the Balance? Should we make children do maths, because it's just too fundamental to miss? I'm often asked this question, as I advocate for more choice and autonomy in education. Here's what I think. 1/

1/7 It sometimes conflates rating with ranking, but a new essay by @kccole314 usefully warns against overvaluing quantification. The problem isn't just that we measure badly (e.g., with standardized tests) but that measurement, per se, can be problematic:

Nicholas Winton helped 669 Jewish children escape the Nazis. His efforts went unrecognized for 50 years. Then in 1988, while sitting as a member of a TV audience, he suddenly found himself surrounded by the kids he’d rescued, now adults. I like to remember this every Jan 27th.

I don’t think any students actually hate math. They just hate they aren’t comfortable performing it which causes anxiety. Don’t blame math. Math is beautiful.

This response reads like a chatgpt essay. There are a lot of words (and buzzwords) and dazzles in its inability to say much of substance. It dodges the core questions at the heart of the controversy through semantic slight of hand and random asides

I’m starting to get the same feeling in my stomach about “rubric” that I get from “evidence-based.” A bad feeling.

Discovered my new favorite reading assignment. Dear students: Read this until you realize why I assigned it. Then email me a one sentence summary of what point you think the author is trying to make. https://t.co/uh44sIf28T

Professional educators know what to give value to in these assignments depending on the course/content. Also if we spent as much time in K12 focusing on how to speak effectively as we do writing, the impact of anxiety is greatly reduced.

It has always been a great way to sus out who gets it vs someone who is simply reading something thrown together last minute. Are there subjective elements that disadvantage some students over others? Sure, but that’s inherent in any assessment method (including written work).

Luke’s underdeveloped self-serving hot take of the day: As AI (quillbot, chatgpt) complicates the value of a written essay as a reliable measure of student comprehension oral assignments/public speaking will emerge as a more reliable metric in helping educators assess learning.
