If you’ve never been taught this, you’re not alone. Most coaches focus on the swing. But some issues come from your body, not your technique. Setup posture is one of the biggest silent killers of rotation.

Most golfers aren’t limited because they’re “tight.” They’re limited because they’re set up in a position the body cannot rotate from. Fix the pelvis → fix the rotation → fix the swing.

Neutral pelvis = More hip rotation More thoracic rotation Better sequencing Less back pain A setup you can actually move from This one fix can change the entire kinematic chain.

The correct approach? Yes, push the hips back… BUT ALSO bring the pelvis back to neutral. Watch your belt line: If it’s dumped forward, you’re in excessive arch. If you tilt back to neutral, you unlock rotation and protect the spine.

Here’s what that setup creates: Compressed lumbar spine Locked-up hips A swing that can’t rotate Tomorrow-morning back pain Automatic compensations in takeaway, trail hip, and sequence This is why so many golfers feel “tight” or “stuck” at setup.

That cue isn’t wrong — but it’s only half the equation. When golfers hear it, they push their hips back and dump the pelvis into excessive anterior tilt. Translation: Your belt buckle points toward the ground → your lower back jams → rotation drops instantly.

Most golfers are giving away 30–50% of their rotation before they even take the club back. And the crazy part? It’s coming from a cue almost every coach still teaches… “Stick your butt out.”
