Great question! Veterans, how do you feel about this?.
I was asked not long ago if I, as a veteran, prefer "thank you for your service" or " welcome home". In my opinion,"thank you for your service" is for all veterans, and "welcome home" is reserved for the Vietnam veterans. The reason why I feel this way is because they didn't.
