The report traces the trend of migration flows that, over the last 30 years, have seen the population with a migrant background grow to nearly six million and highlights the social transformations and the impact this growth has had on Italian society.

Perceived benefits linked to increased support for FGM/C medicalization include religious approval, better marriage prospects, cleanliness, and conformity to traditional cultural values.

Findings indicate that, compared with women who support the practice unconditionally, the requirement of medicalization correlates with higher educational level, age, being in a couple, and being from a country where FGM/C is more commonly medicalized.

Data are from a national survey on FGM/C conducted in Italy in 2016, covering a representative sample of 1,378 women aged 18 + who were born in Nigeria, Egypt, Eritrea, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Somalia, and Ivory Coast.

This study investigates the extent of the support for FGM/C conditioned on its medicalization among migrant women from FGM/C-practising countries residing in Italy, and the characteristics of women supporting the practice.

The medicalization of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) as a harm reduction strategy is a highly debated issue, although largely unexplored among migrants living outside practising countries.

Our research shows that overseas students, long-term migrants living with a partner, and, in general, migrants facing economic hardship and job insecurity are more likely to receive financial reverse remittances.

Following an in-depth analysis of the limited existing literature, our study focuses on the practice of financial reverse remittances among migrants living in the Italian region of Lombardy to assess their incidence, relationship with the migration stage and of economic hardship.

While many studies examine the remittances sent by migrants to their home countries, little is known about the financial resources that flow from home countries to migrants abroad, also known as reverse remittances.
