Looking snowy now at
@DFWAirport
...
Last time DFW saw measurable snow = Jan. 6th, 2017 (over 3 years)
Last time DFW saw 1" of snow = March 5th, 2015 (almost 5 years)
We'll see how much we end up with today!
#wfaaweather
Look how densely populated the area is where the likely
#DallasTornado
moved thru N. Dallas last night.
This path isn't exact at all, but there are NO open areas anywhere close.
Given the damage I've seen, it is INCREDIBLE if we end up with no fatalities.

Did you notice the roads or concrete were wet this morning even though there was no rain or drizzle? This is called ground sweat, and it happens when the ground is cooler than the humid and warmer air above it, which causes condensation to form on the concrete.

PLEASE clean all the ice and snow off your car before you drive anywhere today. I saw multiple giant chunks fly off of cars and almost hit other drivers on my way home.
When we talk about the "cap" breaking, this is what we mean.
Look how storms all erupt almost a the exact same time just west of the DFW area.

Explosive development of last night's North Texas supercell. It looked like a bomb going off in Montague County around 9:20pm Saturday night.
First tornado warning was at 9:41pm and tornado warnings continued with the storm until 1am.
It’s back to work tomorrow which means the summer break beard has to go...
UNLESS this post gets enough likes/RTs to convince
@wfaaweather
and
@carolynmungo
to let me keep it!
PLEASE SHOW SOME SUPPORT!!
You can literally see the cold front moving into Cedar Hill!
Nice shot of the shelf cloud along the leading edge of the front this morning.

FYI:
If you see this pic or story floating around today, it is a picture and article written about a storm 2 years ago. NOT yesterday’s storm.
Great pic. But old news.

Sorry North Texas, your generic phone weather app is WRONG!!
No snow with this event. It’ll be either sleet or freezing rain (as we’ve been saying all along).
#wfaaweather
You want me to mail you a copy of my METEOROLOGY degree from A&M?
I took more math and science than engineers, but keep up with the insults since you know me so well...
For those covering
#Laura
:
Nacogdoches - nak uh dough chiz
Natchitoches - nah codish
Neches - nay chiz
Calcasieu - cow ka shoo
Sabine - suh bean (but I've heard some in LA use "say bean")
I know there are plenty of others, especially small towns. Reply with others if you want.
Strong winds hitting Denton!
Here's a timelapse of when those outflow winds when they hit Denton a short while ago. Lots of dust! Wind gusts were 50-60mph as those winds hit.

PSA:
If you’re going to go gawk at storm damage, do it safely. Watch out for traffic lights that are out. Don’t stop in the middle of the road or drive excessively slow on busy roads. Don’t use your phone and drive. Respect others who are cleaning up.

Have you heard us talk about the "cap"?
These images perfectly show you the cap. See how the smoke isn't rising higher than a certain height? That's the cap. It's a layer of warm air above the surface that acts like a lid, and prevents the smoke from rising any higher.
TODAY (FRIDAY) AT 4PM:
We say "see you later" not goodbye to
@ColleenWeather
. Make sure to tune in!
You may already know this, but Colleen is one of the kindest and sweetest people you will ever meet. The weather center will not be the same, and you will be missed!!
Few neat things I noticed during the eclipse:
-seeing glow to the northwest of areas not in totality
-Jupiter and Venus visible
-hearing cheers of people watching in the distance before we hit totality as they saw it just seconds before us
-definitely cooler and pleasant outside
Sped up video of tornado crossing HWY 175 between Kemp and Mabank at the north end of Cedar Creek Lake. Ropes out north of 175 at the end of the video.
Video from Austin Page (shaky because the the speed up)

The full "harvest" moon showing up nicely on our Dallas camera this morning. What's neat about the harvest moon is that is rises and sets near sunrise/sunset giving us a great look at it. This is also the 1st of 2 full moons this month with the next one being on Halloween.
Snow Drought BUSTED!
Officially 0.2" of snow at
@DFWAirport
. The first measurable snow in 3 years and the most snow in 5 years!
Congrats!!

DFW has only been at or below 0° a handful of times on record.
The forecast low tonight is 0°.
Will likely be the coldest night in over 30 years, maybe longer.
#wfaaweather
Sirens are being sounded for Irving and Grand Prairie. They could be going off in other areas of the DFW area as well. There are no Tornado Warnings, but wind gusts of 70+ mph are possible. These are potentially damaging, so the sirens are being sounded.
#wfaaweather
Looks like North Texas could see a little Saharan dust (yes, all the way from Africa) in our sky sometime this weekend. You might notice it looking a little more hazy Saturday and Sunday.

This is VERY important to understand.
Unless you bury every transmission line (which isn’t going to happen), ice can cause power outages. This is not unique to Texas. Any state with above ground transmission lines will be susceptible to ice causing issues.
@MToney
The widespread loss of power last year was because of the intense cold and how long it lasted. Yes, ice can also cause power outages. But not related to overwhelming the grid.
-2°!
That was the low at
@DFWAirport
this morning.
That's only the 2nd time on record it has been -2° and the only time it was colder was -8° back in 1899. DFW has not seen a temp like this in over 70 years.
Historic.

Recognize the weather fairy who paid me a visit today??
In all seriousness,
@wfaa
had Employee Appreciation today, and
@wfaaweather
stopped by the house (socially distanced, of course) to drop by a gift bag.
Thanks! And good to see you in person for the first time since MARCH!
Hearing reports of sirens in parts of Collin County (McKinney, Allen, Fairview). There is a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for southern Collin County, but worst of the storm is moving away from those areas. Sirens were sounded for the threat of 65-70mph winds NOT a tornado.
Confidence is increasing for winter weather in North Texas mainly Wednesday eve thru Thursday. A mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow is looking likely followed by very cold temps Thursday into Friday. Exact amounts will be ironed out as we get closer. Stay tuned for updates!
Nice "roost ring" showing up on radar this morning near the Seagoville-Crandall-Kaufman area. The radar is detecting birds taking flight from their roosts. This time of year it is likely migratory birds taking flight.
Anyone have any ideas what birds they could be?
If you are wondering...
Each community, city, etc. can sound the "outdoor warning sirens" (they are not just "tornado sirens") for what they deem appropriate.
However, most places in NTX have agreed to sound them for a tornado, 70+ mph winds, or golf ball size hail or bigger.
SURVIVOR TREE: The Survivor Tree at the Oklahoma City Memorial has some damage from the ice storm. A big limb is down. Crews have supports up and are knocking off ice. Arguably the most symbolic/important landmark in Oklahoma.
@koconews
@OKCNM
Lots of people asking about the "wavy" clouds today...they are called asperitas (used to be called undulatus asperatus), and simply just look like rippling ocean waves in the sky. While not super rare, we only see them here in North Texas a few times a year.
#wfaaweather
Missed this pic too. Probably the best I've seen.
Looks like this is looking from the east side of Lake Ray Hubbard back to the west or northwest.

All good things must come to an end…🧔♂️
See you back on
@wfaa
tomorrow morning!
(Also just realized my last two tweets have been selfies. I’m so sorry. It’ll never happen again 🤦♂️)
Difference between "freezing rain" and "sleet":
Freezing rain - Looks like normal rain. All liquid. But freezes on contact with the ground, leaf, mailbox, etc.
Sleet - Frozen raindrops. Frozen when they hit the ground. Pellets of ice.
