I’ll save the Maryland State Economic Development and Maryland Momentum Fund failures for another round of storytime. TL;DR - Cumbersome process and weak leadership iced the state from a >$150M return on $750K round 🥴.

Now that we have 150,000+ customers and employ 500+ teammates, I can only recall examples of Maryland state-backed organizations hindering our scale.

My lackluster experience with Maryland continued. One of my favorite embarrassing tech flops was Maryland’s Cybersecurity Investment Incentive Tax Credit (which Huntress was deemed ineligible for 🙄)

We also had to take Virginia-based state funding to help us launch what would become $2B+ Huntress. 🚀 . If anyone knows beltway traffic, you can relate to how big of deal this is (massive thanks to the Center For Innovative Technology for letting me camp in your garage). 😅

My first run-in was in 2013 when forming StrategicIO (a cleared defense contractor supporting US intelligence agencies). Our state support to scale a Silicon Valley startup was so poor, we ended up attending an out-out-state accelerator called MACH37.

Maryland continues to demonstriate its inability to foster business friendly environments for scaling innovators 😔. I want to clarify this is a fairly party-agnostic trend that has crossed blue and red governors. 🥶😡.
